“Doing my part, giving the others a break,” he said, not even bothering to lie to her.

They never did it again, after having an active sex life for months. She told her sister it was like being beat over the head with a sledgehammer. Dave just cut her off. There was no fighting, no excuses. He just dropped out.

No amount of badgering, begging or threats would get him to level with her. He was just finished. Probably within that first week, she knew he was seeing someone else, but she never discovered who it was. There was a new dispatcher at headquarters, but asking around yielded nothing. She spied on him, looked at his phone when she could.

Friday night she called him three times, but his phone when to voicemail. She even called the station, but he was out. Then that morning, she was going to confront him once and for all when he got home, but he’d beat her to the punch. She got a text from him about the time she figured he’d be coming off his shift.I have something to say if you’re up. Please call me.

“What do you want? I’m sure you’re not coming back, so save your breath. I see that you’ve moved all your clothes out.”

“Okay, well, if you’ve figured it out, I won’t harp on it. I’m sorry. I’ll send you money through PayPal to take care of the rent through August. Our lease is up then. You’re finished with school in June, so hopefully you’ll find a job and can manage, but, in the meantime, you’ll have a little buffer.”

“Well, thank you very much. That was generous of you.”

There was silence at the end of the line. “Goodbye, Amber. Take care.”

“Wait, Dave, who is she?”

He hung up.

Sitting on the white canvas-covered couch in Katrina’s pristine living room, she sat on his lap as he gave her the details.

“I was ready to get a restraining order, but she didn’t freak out. She still might, but at least I got this far.”

She kissed his forehead. “You’re here. We’re together. We don’t have to go uptown for anything. I’m ready to hole up here for the weekend.”

“Would you like to take a drive out to Maggie and Justin’s? I told Justin I was moving in with you today.”

“Ask him. It’s better if it comes from you. I’m still worried about my girlfriend.”

“Maggie’s good with us,” Dave said. “You wait. I’d say she’s overjoyed.”

“Well, that’s a plus. But I don’t want to push it.”

He got out his phone and dialed his brother’s number. “What are you doing later?”

“We’re working in the barn. Come over now. I could use some help with the siding.”

“I’ll have Katrina with me.”

“So! Did you do the deed?” Justin asked. “We’ve been on pins and needles here waiting to hear.”

“I did.” He looked at Katrina when he said it and smiled. “I did the deed.”

“What’s next?”

“We’re in one-day-at-a-time mode here.”

“Good luck,” Justin said, laughing. “We wrote the primer on how to mess that up. I’ll see you when you get here.”

Dave ended the call, not wanting to leave, but understanding that it might be wise to get out of the house together while they could.

“I guess we’re going,” Katrina said. “We won’t get bored.”

“No, that’s for sure. Tomorrow I want to sit on your terrace for the entire day and have straight brain waves.”

Threading her arms around his shoulders, she hugged him tight. “That sounds heavenly. Next week is insane for me. I’m flying all over the country for my work. But it’s a good thing. I’ll tell you about it later.”

“Are you sure? I’ll listen now.”
