“You’re pretty healthy, right?”

“I’m healthy. I gave up alcohol for Lent because everyone else did, and I didn’t want to drink alone. I’ve had a few glasses of champagne but no binging. I struggled with that, but before long, it was the right thing to do. Sobriety has a way of making all the intolerables in your life come to the surface.”

“Right, I noticed that, too.”

The discussion on the way back to Cypress Cove got to the core of their relationship and solidified so much with Dave and Katrina. They were in love and devoted to one another and were going to add a third party to their relationship in about seven months, give or take a week.

Chapter 3

Back to reality, the Sunday of marvel would feed their souls for the months to come. Working mostly from home, she took day trips, flying out at dawn and taking the red-eye back so she could be home with Dave. Then a long trip came up that she couldn’t avoid.

The couple barely survived the separation. They talked on the phone hourly and texted constantly. She was in tears by the third day, missing him so badly, and by the fourth, he was like a wild man, almost getting killed when he hit a deer with his truck and ended up in a ditch.

Unable to take one more day, she canceled her meetings for the rest of the week and flew home. On Thursday afternoon, she stood next to him with her suitcases around her in the driveway, looking at the mangled metal. “You could have died.”

“I could have, but I kept thinking I had to get back to the cottage and get my dirty underwear in the washing machine before she gets home.”

Laughing, she threaded her arm around his waist. “I guess you’ll get a new truck.”

“I drove this home, unbelievably. The insurance company is coming, and then they’ll tow it away. I should have been able to swerve to avoid the deer, but I was like a zombie, missing you all week.”

“Ugh, that’s not good. From now on, two days away is all I’ll do. If I have to fly back again the next day, I will. But no more four-day-in-a-row trips.”

“Maybe we’ll get used to it,” he said doubtfully.

“No, I won’t. Plus, with the baby coming, it’s not possible. I’m not leaving my kid.”

“The nanny and the kid will come with you. I’ll come when I can. You shouldn’t change plans after you’ve seen your boyfriend’s wrecked truck. Let’s get you inside away from this mess.”

He reached for her suitcases, pushing one on wheels with his boot.

“This conversation is hysterical. When I told you I was pregnant, you were going to stay with the kid while I traveled. Now, I’ll have an entourage.”

“Just trying to be supportive,” he said, laughing.

He followed her to the door.

“God, it’s so good to be home.”

Inside, she looked around the cottage, its pull tantalizing her. After being alone there for a week, Dave had kept it neat. Hugging him tightly, she rested her head on his chest. She missed him so much.

“What’s the plan for the weekend?”

“This weekend is R and R. Sunday, my dad invited us for lunch after church. We can tell him about the baby then.”

“It’s a little early, Dave. I’m not sure.”

She didn’t say it out loud, but he got the point right away; she could have a miscarriage.

“You’re almost three months. That’s safe.”

“Does he even know who I am?”

“Of course, you’re Blanche DuBois from the masked ball. He loved that.”

“Jeez, too funny. I guess we can tell him. His second grandchild. I keep forgetting Maggie is pregnant, too.” She dragged a suitcase to the bedroom, Dave following with the rest. “I just want to unpack and get in the shower.”

“We have urgent business to attend to,” Dave said, reaching for her to hold again. “Your boyfriend needs to make love to you right away.”
