“You are my number one reason for doing anything right now. Unpacking can wait. I’ll be right out.”

He held on to her arm when she tried to leave.

“I’ll take one with you if you’ll let me,” he said.

“I’m honored.”

She reached out for his hand, and he followed her inside, shutting the door.

Friday morning, they went to Katrina’s obstetrician’s office together for the first ultrasound. “I’m shaking, I’m so excited,” Dave said. “We get to see if she is really a she!”

Katrina patted his hand. “Will it upset you if it’s a boy?”

He shook his head. “This is a cliché, but I just want a healthy, normal baby.”

“We’re both young and healthy and I don’t drink or smoke, so chances are good he’s healthy.”

“You mean, she’shealthy,” Dave said, teasing.

They arrived at the office and went through the usual routine. She got on the scale and he stood behind her and peeked.

“Whoa!” he yelled, teasing her when he saw how much she weighed, so she playfully slugged him in the stomach, making him grunt.

In the exam room, he helped her up on the table even though she really didn’t need it. Dave was out of his element, the room dwarfed by his size. The doctor came in and looked up at him like he was a giant, and then she snickered.

“We’re measuring this baby’s size today, and not a moment too soon, I see.”

He flushed and Katrina noticed he even kicked his toe around a little. She reached out for his hand and squeezed it, smiling.

“Okay, let’s get started.”

She explained about the cold gel she would use and the wand she’d press lightly over Katrina’s belly. The heartbeat rang out, filling the room with life. Immediately moved, Dave dug his fingernails into his palm so he didn’t cry.

“Here we go! Oops, now that’s a cooperative baby!”

Dave hunched over to see the screen and forgetting his pride, promptly burst into tears seeing the little one spread-eagle.

“Oh, great.” Katrina laughed. “An exhibitionist.”

“Do you want to know what you’re having?”

“Yes!” Dave cried.

“It’s a boy!”

“A boy? I was sure it was a girl,” he said in disbelief. Tears rolled down his cheeks. “A boy. Wow.”

The doctor talked more about what she saw on the screen, all of it conveniently going right over Dave’s head.

“A boy,” Katrina replied, looking up at Dave.

He bent over her again and kissed her, then wiped his face with his sleeve.

The doctor continued with the examination. “Now we’ll look for specific indicators that will show us how well your baby is doing.”

Alarm bells rang in Katrina’s head.

“Dave, why don’t you go out and call your dad? He’ll be so excited. Tell him to think of names.”
