“I’m so hopeful this minute compared to the last.”

“I’ve read that’s normal after the news. You swing back and forth between despair and promise.”

“I’d better enjoy this; is that what you’re saying?”

“Pretty much.”

They held each other for a while, silent. Finally, the reality that life was going to move forward no matter how devastated they were hit Dave. His stomach growled, bringing him back to the present.

“Do you want to eat? I’m actually hungry.”

“I’ll eat. I’m spent.”

“Yes. That’s a good word for it,” Dave said. “Spent. Let’s eat and talk about the next house project for a while, and then we can face the big question.”

“Let me guess. How are we going to tell our families?”

“Exactly,” Dave said. “My father cried when the Saints won last weekend. Steel yourself for that. And Rose, I’m not sure about Rose.”

“What about Maggie and Justin?” Katrina asked.

“They’ll be fine,” Dave said. “It’s some of the backwoods folk that scare me.”

“We’ll have to educate them. I swear to you, if anyone says it’s God’s will, punishing me for my sins, I’ll choke them with my bare hands.”

“Is it God’s will?”

“Dave, it’s not God’s will that we might have a kid with special needs, okay? No. It’s nature. An extra chromosome, like a freak accident. Don’t let anyone put guilt on you.”

“Lucky us to have devoted friends,” Dave moaned.

“They’re devoted, but they won’t do the blame game. We have to give them more credit than that.”

“Can we stay in for the rest of the weekend?” he asked, trying not to whine.

“I have Annie’s baby shower tomorrow,” she answered. “If Mags invites us for Sunday though, let’s go. We should tell them.”

“Okay.” He took a deep breath. “I forgot about the shower.”

“It’ll be a distraction.”

Dave looked at her, worried.

“I didn’t have any big plans for the kid except to hold him. Is that normal, or did I have a premonition?”

“I’m not sure. I didn’t have plans either. I just wanted him. I wanted my own family and I’m going to get it.”

He reached for her again, holding her, rubbing her back. “Do you have the pictures of the last ultrasound?”

“They’re on the fridge,” she said.

She felt him stiffen up. “Dave…”

He jumped into the air, startling her.

“I’m going to have a boy! I’m going to be a dad.” He ran out into the main room.

Following him, she yelled, “Dave, please don’t stand in front of the window naked.”
