“That will be so nice to have the three of us together with our babies,” Katrina said.

They reached the end of the dock.

“Someday I’m going to have a gazebo built down here.”

“Wonderful. Here we are again,” Katrina said, settling in the chair. “Visits to Bayou Cottage wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the dock.”

“We are making memories here with our babies,” Maggie replied. She leaned back and closed her eyes. “Motherhood is exhausting. No one tells you.”

“They did, we just didn’t listen,” Katrina said, pulling her shirt up. “I don’t need to cover my boobs out here, do I?”

“Only if you’re shy in front of the egrets.”

Her phone beeped. “Annie’s here without Steve. Why am I not shocked?”

“Should we help her?”

“Justin’s bringing her down.”

Katrina got the hooter hider out of her bag.

“I’m not jealous of you,” Maggie said, watching her cover up. “Justin can see a woman nursing and it won’t incur my wrath.”

“I like my relationship with Justin the way it is.”

“Yeah. A woman’s boobs are still her boobs, even if she’s nursing.”

The dock vibrated, and they turned around to see Annie and Justin with an entire load of baby stuff.

“I should have brought the stroller,” she called out.

“You can use mine,” Katrina said. “I want to hold this nugget as much as I can when I have the chance.”

“You’re going to have to start traveling again before long, is that right?” Maggie asked.

“I’m afraid so.”

The women kissed her and made room for Annie. “Where’s Steve?” Maggie asked.

“Steve is probably history. Don’t be shocked when the time comes. It’s so over, we need a new word for over.”

“I’m so sorry,” they chorused. Then Katrina asked, “What happened between this morning when we were having coffee and now?”

“He texted me he was going out tonight and not to hold dinner. That was it. Who’s he going out with? His loser friends? We shouldn’t have gotten married. What the hell was my rush? Was it for my parents? They’ve been here once to see Stevie. Once! He’s almost five months old.”

“Honey, your parents are still young,” Katrina said. “They still work full-time. It’s not like they are retired and can take off at a moment’s notice.”

“Stop making excuses for everyone,” Maggie said.

“I’m the great enabler,” Katrina replied, laughing. “But truly, how many times has Rose been out here? And she lives five miles away.”

“Rose is nuts. I’m glad she’s staying away,” Maggie said. “You should be furious with her. It’s her fault Amber found out about baby David’s diagnosis before you were ready to make your announcement. By the way, the announcements were a class act. I’m insulted I didn’t get one, but that’s okay.”

“Why would you need an announcement?” Annie asked. “You’re sitting next to her!”

They roared with laughter; the humor only old friends were able to impose on each other.

“How’d you even find out about them?” Katrina asked, laughing.
