“Okay, I’m going to try it on. You know I have all of Grandma’s things in the attic. There’s even a wedding dress up there.”

“Is there? What does it look like?”

“It’s silk satin, sleeveless, body hugging. I was going to wear it to Aunt Elizabeth’s wedding but chose that flapper dress instead.”

“I remember now. You looked beautiful. And you’re going to look beautiful in this, too.”

“Don’t say anything unkind about my body, please,” Maggie said, pulling off her clothes.

“I’d never! You must have me mixed up with someone else,” Rose said, indignant. “You have a woman’s body. You’re not a skeleton with boobs, as Vic calls the underwear models on TV.”

“What do you watch?” Maggie asked, grimacing. She slipped the dress over her head, and it fell around her body like a sheet of cool water, silky and smooth.

“See if it will zip,” Maggie directed, and Rose got behind her and zipped it up with no problem.

“Perfect. Oh, Maggie, you’re beautiful!” Rose cried, breaking down in tears, her shoulders shaking as she leaned against the arm of Maggie’s new couch so she didn’t fall over.

“Mother, for God’s sake, calm down. What’s wrong with you?”

“I’m so happy that you’re finally happy,” she cried.

“Thank you, Mother. It was a long time coming, but yes, I’m finally happy. I feel so lucky I found Justin.”

“He’s such a nice young man. I really love him like my son,” Rose said, blowing her nose into a paper towel Maggie had handed her.

“So, what do you think if I get rid of the sleeves? I hate the length, truthfully.”

“We can ask Dave to take them off. I can save the fabric for alterations in case someone else wants to wear it.”

“Like Tina?”

“Who else?” Rose asked. “I see this being a special dress in the Chastain family. I wish Emily knew you were going to wear it. She’d love you, Maggie.”

When Dave got ahold of the dress with a request from Maggie to remove the sleeves, he was so excited.

Katrina watched him sidelong. This was not a situation she had ever imagined she’d see Dave in, altering his mother’s wedding dress to suit her best friend.

“What do you think of the dress?” Dave asked, holding it across his outstretched arms like an offering to her.

“It’s just beautiful. What is this fabric?” Katrina asked, fingering the beaded lace.

“It’s some kind of jacquard woven silk. I think it’s called Leavers lace. Look at the label.” He inserted his hand into the dress and pulled it partially inside out so she could see the hand-embroidered label in the seam.

“Wow, so Maggie is going to wear vintage Oscar de la Renta.”

“She wants the sleeves removed, and I think that will be an improvement.”

“Go for it. I still can’t believe she’s getting married.”

“What about us?” Dave asked.

“What about us? We don’t have to get married just because they are.”

“I know, but I wanna get married,” Dave insisted.

“No, you don’t. And I like us this way. It’s sexy. I’m your girlfriend, not that old ball and chain.”
