“I’d never refer to you in that way.”

“I know, but let’s just stay the way we are. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

“Ah, you’re no fun,” he teased.

“You’ll thank me for it someday.”

“When I have to pay taxes in April, I won’t thank you,” he said.

“Trust me, you will. I just got a raise.”

“You did? Well, congratulations!” He leaned over to kiss her. “Working from home fifty percent of the time must work out.”

“It must. I’m not complaining.”

Dave’s phone beeped. “It’s my father. Hey, Pop.” He listened, watching Katrina. “You want me to come over now? Is everything okay?”

Hoping she didn’t have to go, Katrina fussed at the kitchen sink while Dave talked. She looked up when he said goodbye.

“You heard that,” he said. “My father wants me to come over. Justin is going to stop in before he leaves for home. Rose found something besides the dress today that he wants to talk to us about.”

“Okay, I’ll be here in case Luanne wants to leave on time for a change.” Luanne was Katrina and Dave’s baby Davie’s nanny.

Kissing Katrina, he hung the wedding dress on a padded hanger and placed it in his man cave that was slowly turning into his craft room. Katrina felt guilty that she hadn’t offered to tag along, but it sounded like something she could bypass without upsetting Dave.

“I’ll bring something home for dinner,” he said. “You know, going to my dad’s means their leftovers for our dinner.”

“I’m fine with that,” she said. “No pizza again.”

She walked him to the door and kissed him again. Since they’d been together, his family had been a fairly constant source of stress. Hopefully, whatever information he learned over there tonight would lead to their healing as a family and not more pain.
