“Man, that is a long time. How come you decided to move in with the others?”

There’s something in Mike’s tone, something in the way he’s looking at me now that has me hesitant to speak. Mike usually doesn’t care about others’ personal lives. Why is he prying into mine?

Because you’re crashing at his place, I tell myself. That must be it. He hasn’t figured anything out. Lucas wouldn’t be so stupid to put our exact lives into his book. Most likely he’s curious because I’ve seized his room from him and he wants to know what’s going on.

“Because it’s cheaper,” I say while running a hand through my hair. “Getting our own place would have been too expensive.”

Mike bobs his head. “Yeah, I suppose. So, how much is the rent on that place?”

My heart lurches. “What?”

“Wait, Lucas bought the place, right?”

Why is he asking all these fucking questions?

“Does he ask you for rent?”

Like the fucking moron I am, I shake my head.

“That must be nice,” Mike says, his smile widening. “I wonder if—” His eyes widen and his words die as I lurch toward him and snatch his book. “Dude! What the fuck are you doing?”

I open the book to where the receipt marks it and turn away from Mike. My eyes widen as I read the passage, tempted to rip out the pages and throw the fucking book on the ground. Mike is so fucking lucky I don’t have a lighter, or else I would light the whole thing on fire.

“What the fuck!” I shout after I finish reading the page.

“Can I have the book back now?” Mike asks while reaching for me.

I side step him and run out of the kitchen. Lucas is fucking dead. DEAD. I can’t believe he took liberties—writing about our lives like this without asking me if it’s okay. I knew someone was going to figure out the truth about us. Not that it matters that much now, since we’re pretty much over. But still! How could he fucking do this!

“Hey!” Mike shouts while I shove on my shoes.

“Give me my book back!”

I ignore him while I shove open the door and run toward the sidewalk.

“Seth!”

I look both ways, wondering which way is toward town. Lucas will be at work and I’m in the mood to start trouble. Who gives a fuck if he gets fired?

“Seth! Come back! I want to finish my book!”I turn left and start running, unable to stop. I hear Mike running after me, but he’s too slow. I’ve always been faster than him. It’s been so long since I’ve run like this. If it wasn’t for Lucas’s book, or Rachel’s baby, I would be happy—having the wind in my hair, running so fast it almost feels like I can fly.

But all I feel is rage.

And that rage takes me straight to The Cafe. My running slows and I peer through the window, finding Lucas cleaning a mug. No-one is in line. I don’t even see his coworkers. Perfect. I can go full berserk mode. I slam open the door. The bell jangles loudly. Lucas’s head pops up, his eyes widening on me. He sets the coffee down beside him while I stalk forward, my rage growing with each and every step.

“Seth, what are you—”

I hold up the book and his mouth closes. Realization flickers through his gaze, yet he doesn’t seem upset at all.

“Mike, figured it out!” I shout.

Lucas sighs and he leans back against the counter behind him while crossing his arms. “That’s why you’re here?”

He’s got to be fucking kidding me.

“You came all this way because you’re worried about my book? Seriously, Seth?”

“If fucking idiot Mike can figure it out, then so can the entire campus!”
