Tye only laughs as Knox drags Tessa over to Delaney. Once they're gone, she turns to me and smiles, grabbing my cup and refilling it.

"So, you're friends with the girlfriend of the 49ers quarterback," she teases. "Why am I not surprised?"

My brows furrow. "Who, Tess?" She nods. "I mean, in my defense, I knew her way before she was dating Asher. She's cool even without him."

"She is," Tye agrees. "She was telling me about Safe and Sound, the nonprofit she has. Over the summer, I might help her with it. Be a support system for others who have lost people to tragic accidents."

Accidents. Right. The truth of what happened to Davi weighs heavily on me all the time, but I've gotten in the habit of pushing it down. Does Tye deserve to know? Absolutely. But do I think it would do any good? Not a chance. If anything, it would make matters worse. It's bad enough as it is.

"That's really admirable of you," I tell her honestly. "I think you'd be a big help to a lot of people."

Her smile brightens, like my approval is actually something she needs. "Thanks, Carter."

LATER IN THE NIGHT,they roll my cake out to me. It's got four tiers with giant sparklers shooting out of the sides. Everyone sings Happy Birthday in a tune that makes me wonder if my ears are bleeding. As they finish and everyone claps, my eyes meet Tye's on the other side of the room. Just like that, she's all that matters.

I know exactly what I'm wishing for.
