"Tye, I can explain," I try.

Noah snorts. "Sure he can. Why don't you ask him about it? Or better yet, ask to see the video."

"Will you shut the fuck up?" I shout, wanting nothing more than to slam his face into the pavement.

When I turn back to Tye, she's already taken a few steps away from me, putting space between her and me, so I can't reach out to touch her. Tears are building in her eyes, and I can see the way she's closing in on herself—a subconscious defense mechanism I don't even think she realizes she does.

“What video, Carter?” she sneers. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“I-it’s complicated. Noah doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

She huffs exasperatedly. “Right, and Davi’s diary just went missing.”

The truth lingers between the two of us, and I know that nothing I can say will make it right. There are no words that will justify the truth I’ve kept from her all this time. As she stares back at me, she can see it written all over my face.

Noah is telling the truth.

"Benz, please," I beg. "Just let me explain."

"Explain." A wet but humorless chuckle bubbles out of her. "Explain what? That you're a goddamn liar? That I'm stupid as hell for believing you? Save it. I don't want to hear it."

Everything inside me shatters into a million pieces as she turns around and walks away. I feel like I can't breathe. Like the air is suddenly thicker and no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get a deep enough breath in. My fist clenches, and I whirl back around to confront Noah, but he’s already back in his car. The violence builds in me and I punch the closest thing to me—the brick wall. Pain shoots through my hand, but it doesn't even begin to compare to the pain in my chest.

I had her.

She was mine.

And I fucking ruined it.
