If he wasn’t fit to be a husband, how in the hell would he ever be fit to be a father? What was he doing? This was nuts. He was crazy for thinking about having a relationship with Emily.

Maybe Aunt Rose was right. Maybe he was jeopardizing everything by being with Emily.

“What did you want to talk about?” Travis asked, gazing at him in a quizzical way.

Starting to stomp across the yard again, he realized they were halfway to his cabin. Halfway to the place he had to vacate for two weeks.

“Aunt Rose suspended me for two weeks, because of the bull yesterday and the fact that someone told her about Emily and me in the kitchen.”

“What?” Travis’s eyes widened.

“Yes, I’ve got to get off the property for two weeks,” he said. “Guess who is going to get all the work. Because you know most of our cousins are way too lazy to do ranch work.”

“I’m not going to be far from Samantha’s side. I’m not doing all the work. That’s bullshit,” Travis said.

“You’re damn right it is. But I want to know who saw me and Emily and ratted us out.”

Travis shook his head. “That crazy old woman can be a real pain in the ass. Maybe she should take care of the guests.”

With a sigh, Tanner reached the porch of his little cabin.

“I’ve got to pack my things and speak to Emily. I’m ending it. I’ll never be a fit husband, and if we were to somehow create a baby like the two of you, that would be bad. I’ll never be a good father.”

He turned and started to walk off. Travis grabbed him by the arm.

“Don’t do this, Tanner. You’re just reacting to Aunt Rose. Give it some time. Don’t break things off with Emily. She’s good for you. These last few weeks, I’ve seen you doing so much better."

Pulling his arm from his brother’s hand, he shook his head. “I’ve got to. For her own sake. Good luck, brother.”
