“You said you were at the funeral for two reasons, but only gave me one of those reasons. What was the other?”

“You didn’t notice? Ryan’s family?”His voice was a mix of gloating and unmistakable confusion.

I remembered back to when he wrapped physical arms around me. Though I couldn’t see them, I could certainly feel them. I wanted my fingers to travel over the features I had already felt, but now I wanted to see him, too.

I closed my eyes as I visualised him. Imagining him as he cocked an arrogant eyebrow as I scanned him. He would rake his eyes over me, lingering a little longer on my chest that filled my sweater nicely, though not massively. Then I would smile at him and tilt my head, letting him know I caught him looking.

Would it be a battle between us, or would it be pure dynamite?

What the fuck, Lacey.

He rumbled a laugh, as though he were with me in my thoughts.

I rolled my eyes at the ceiling.“I was upset. His mother spoke to me and she was lovely.”

“His mother is...”The dark king stopped.“She differs from the rest of the family. You made a mistake, Lacey, and that mistake nearly cost you dearly. I told you not to bind with anyone, not only for my sake, but I knew one of your knights was a fraud. One of your knights was not who he claimed to be.”

“Ryan...”I whispered.

“Ryan tried to bite you. Why do you think he would do that?”

“How do you know that?”

“I know if he succeeded, I would have taken his life, anyway.”

“Who was he?”

“Who is he?”

I gasped.“Sorry?”

“You heard right, Lacey. Be very careful.”

Memories of the funeral hit me like a lightning strike. My eyes bolted wide open. His father wasn’t there, his mother saying strange things about letting Ryan be himself.

“Who is he?”I asked.

“He’ll show himself soon enough.”

Chapter 36

Lacey

Itwasthedaythat Blake and I planned to bind and I met him at his apartment. I should be nervous but somehow I wasn't. My focus had changed and now I wanted to feel Blake in the same way I felt Kane and Seb.

Strangely, I already thought I felt him in the same way.

I strolled around the living room, glancing out of the window, then around the apartment. Seeing medical books strewn across the table. “Where’s Jack?” I asked. There was no sign of him.

“With Zena,” he said. “They’ve both got a free period.”

“In the bedroom,” I asked.

Blake shrugged his shoulders.

I was happy for my friend, but Jack practically begged me to bind with him. It made no sense at all. Why would he want to be connected to me forever when he wanted a relationship with another?

I realised then what Clay meant when he said to choose my binds carefully. Though being fair to the dark king, he offered the same advice. But Clay was looking out for my future, the life he hoped I’d lead. Whereas, the dark king seemed to have some twisted idea that I should take each of their magical abilities.
