But honestly, who would agree to that?

I closed my eyes.

“Seb, there is an altercation in the coffee shop. Can you walk past and let me know if it is just a fight?” I asked.

“Where are you?”he responded immediately.

“In the bathroom, and I’m still here.”

“I’ll come and get you. I’ll be ten minutes. Don’t leave the bathroom.”

“See you soon,”I said.

I flinched at hearing more noise. This time it was screaming and sounded as though it came from the outside of the shop. My hand still hovered over the handle as I pondered between finding out what it was or doing as Clay always asked and not get involved.

Pop! Crash!

The distinct sound of a single gun fired into a glass piqued my senses. I honed my hearing into the sounds. I could hear as bullets zipped through the air as the gunman continued to threaten people.

“Where is she?” a deep, gravely voice shouted.

Chapter 10

Lacey

Thedoorhandlelowered, and I stared at it I crept to the other side of the door, dropping my bag into the corner of the room. I lowered myself into a fighting stance as a burst of adrenaline heated my blood as it soared through my veins.

“Lacey. It’s me.” I heard Zena call from behind the door before she attempted to enter, obviously knowing what she was about to walk into. “I’m with Safir, we need to take you out of here.”

Her voice didn’t sound nervous or out of the ordinary.

“Seb, there has been gunfire. Be careful. Zena and Safir have come for me,” I said.

“Don’t go with them,” Seb said. “I’m on my way.”

The door cracked as the handle lowered further. I put my hand underneath the handle and pushed at the door. Thinking of Kane’s words. He was always drumming into my head; I had to be careful. Although the two girls were friends, I could never forget Zena was a fae, a dark one at that, and Safir was a vampire. The two groups were enemies to each other and doubtless should be enemies to me.

“Stay there,” I hissed. They couldn’t lower the handle. Regardless of who they were, my strength would always be greater than theirs.

“We need to take you out of here, Lacey,” Safir said, her voice quiet but enough for me to hear.

“Tell me what’s happening out there.” I asked.

“What’s happening, Lacey. Speak to me?”Seb asked, interrupting my conversation with Zena and Safir.

“Another set of men came in arguing with the first group. One man took out a gun and threatened the others,” Zena said.

“Why do you need to get me out of here? What’s the problem?” I asked.

“You Lacey. They came in for you, but we aren’t sure about the second group,” Zena said.

“Shit,” I hissed. “Do we know who they are?”

“They’ve come for me,”I said to Seb and continued telling him what I’d been told.

“Who has come for you and where are you?”he said.

“No, but we need to get you out of here,” Safir said, her voice shaking, but I couldn’t see her face and wondered if it was nerves or fear.
