“Should I fight them?” I asked.

“No way,” Zena said. “We know you’re good, but at least one has a gun and we don’t know if it is plain bullets or something else. You can’t take the risk, Lacey. Mr Trent will kill me if you’re killed,” Zena said. There was a definite edge to her voice.

“Lacey, we have little time. It won’t be long before we can’t hold them back any further.” Safir said.

And she was right. I could hear another snapping of bullets zap through the air and this time it didn’t sound like the missiles reached glass.

“Shit, Lacey, let us in.”

I took my hand off the handle and pulled. Zena and Safir rushed in.

“What's the plan?” I said, laughing but not hearty. “Anyone got an invisible cloak?”

“Get your bag. We’re going through the window,” Zena said.

Through the fucking window. I could have done that myself and been out of here five minutes ago. “I’m sure they’ll have all exits covered,” I said, turning to Zena and hearing another shot coming closer to the door.

“In the bathroom, I’m going out of the window,”I rushed to Seb.

“Do it. We’re on our way.”

Pop!

The sound of a gunshot and wood splintering made me freeze for a moment.

I turned and my eyes widened as I looked at Zena.

She stood motionless for a few seconds and her hand moved to her side, and she raised it to her shocked face. Her glistening eyes expanded at seeing the blood covering her hands. She glanced behind me, her eyebrows raised and her mouth shaped into the perfect O.

She looked back at me.

“Run, Lacey,” Zena whispered as she fell to her knees and then back against the door.

“You’re not going anywhere,” Safir hissed behind me. And a cloth covered hand slapped over my mouth. I clawed, desperate to grasp the cloth, but my entire world went fuddled as though I’d been drinking too much wine.

Blinking rapidly and trying to focus, I grasped at her hand again and pulled the cloth away. Kicked my foot backwards and, with a quick swoop, I swiped her leg away.

She snorted as she sprawled on the floor. “Too late, Lacey. It’s already working.”

My eyes dropped for the briefest of moments. I slapped myself across the face and pinched myself as I tried to maintain control.

“Lacey, we’re here.” It was Seb’s voice and coming from outside.

I needed to get out, but Safir had risen from the floor and stood at my exit. Her face twisted as she sneered at my waning body. Grabbing the cloth from her hand, I used the last of my strength as I covered her mouth. Her startled eyes didn’t take long to close.

Glancing at the window, wondering if my unsteady body could make it out and to safety before I collapsed, once the adrenaline subsided, and the potion kicked in.

And yes, my survival instinct had dashed in loud and clear, but it was a fight between that and the state of mind from what I’d inhaled, because that made me feel like everything had slowed. I turned to work out my surroundings. Seeing Zena, I pressed my finger against her neck. She was still alive for now.

I tried to seal the door with magic, but I didn’t know if it worked. Everything felt different, everything felt strange.

"Seb, they’ve shot Zena. She needs an ambulance. I’ve been...”

I was glad I could still use telepathic communication, but I couldn’t talk any longer. I needed to preserve the last of my energy and I stood on Safir’s body, using her bulk to propel me up to the window. My head dropped back, my eyes closed for a split second. I shook my arms out and tried to steady myself once more. The door to the bathroom pushed at Zena, but it was her bulk that stopped them for now and not my magic.

I pushed myself onto the ledge once more, but the nausea rolled again and the taste of the bile coated my tongue as it rose from deep within my stomach. Deciding that was a good thing and I let it all out and spewed coffee all over Safir’s still body.

I shook my head, took in a deep breath, and steadied myself once more. But there was a darkness that kept engulfing my thoughts for brief moments, and that gave me the chills more than the people trying to get into the bathroom. You can do this.
