I kneeled on the windowsill and tried to push on my hands to raise my body to the window, but my body froze, my blood was turning from slush into ice.

I angled my head once more, just as the bathroom door crashed open, and Zena groaned as she slid toward me. I wanted to help her but could barely move myself. If I could get out of here, I could call for help.

I didn’t know if it was the need to help Zena, but adrenaline surged and I dug my fingernails into the windowsill. Grasping the window opening and pushing with as much strength as I could find. But as much as I wanted my body to move, the burst of energy waned and my fuzzy head and frozen carcass couldn’t go any further.

My eyes slipped into the back of my head, and slow motion snapped in all around me.

My shoulders dropped, my hands lost feeling.

I had no fight left as a dark obscurity took over and I weakened and whirled into a shadowy abyss of nothingness.

Chapter 11

Seb

Myrunningwasgettingfaster and faster, but I was so fucking annoyed with myself for thinking we could trust a dark fae and a vampire with Lacey’s life. I knew all along we were giving them too much credit and I should have trusted my instincts and refused the friendship, just as Kane had.

I regretted it now. Kane was right and we should have stuck together. But I knew that would make Lacey dig in her heels because she was stubborn and refused to think she needed our help. And that’s the reason we gave her far too much space, tried to give her the freedom she craved from being under the kingdom’s heavy gaze, but no more.

“Be careful Seb, I heard gunfire.”

Why would anybody on campus have a gun?

This was normally a peaceful place. The kingdom leaders sent their children here. There were agreements in place to protect them and a place where the future generations learned to live with one another and hopefully make the world a better place. And it worked. Normally, everyone got on.

Or at least it used to.

Things were definitely changing.

“Where are Zena and Safir?”I asked, my suspicions heightened more so now. Were they in on this?

“Outside the bathroom door,”she said, which I assumed meant Lacey wasn’t wholly sure of them either.

“Don’t go with them,”I said. “I’m on my way.”

I wanted to use the real me to get me there faster, but this academy mainly comprised a few dragon shifters, fae, vampires, and students from the magical kingdom. There was no room for me showing who I really was. Lacey still didn’t know, though that time was getting closer and closer and one day I would have no choice but to tell her exactly who I was.

Not just me, though.

At least that was something.

I stopped and plucked my mobile from my pocket and speed dialled Kane. He answered on the first ring.

“Yes,” he grumbled. “I hope this is worthwhile because I’m in a lecture.”

“Lacey is in trouble. She’s in the coffee shop and there's at least one gunman inside.”

“Ah fuck,” he roared. “Sorry.” I heard him say, and I assumed that was to those around him.

“I’m on the other side of the car park. Can you call Ryan and get him there?”

“Yes, I’m leaving now.”

I ran again, picking up speed.

Beeeeeep!

The sound of a horn continuously grinding at me as I ran across the car park startled me.
