“You fucking idiot, I nearly ran you over,” the man who was definitely a dark fae stuck his head from his side window and shouted at me.

“Fuck off faerie,” I shouted and raised my fist and then my middle finger and continued my run.

I could hear a single bullet. There was a whoosh in the air before an explosion roared and glass smashed with an almighty blast. It seemed closer than I expected it should and I glanced at the coffee shop and the door window of the shop scattered around. A group of people screamed as they sprinted out of the cafe. There was so much chaos and people were running away from the scene. Some skidded over the top of car bonnets, like they thought this was some movie scene. Others hid behind cars and anything else less likely to be hit by a stray bullet. I shook my head, seeing the mobile phones as they filmed everything going on inside. I’m sure we’d find out the full situation later on social media.

This is wrong, this is so wrong.

“What happening, Lacey? Speak to me.”

I surveyed the coffee shop from the outside. Two slightly built men stood near the entrance door. Another walked around, scanning the booths. It looked as though he was checking the faces of the people hiding underneath the tables.

“They’ve come for me,”Lacey said.

“Who has come for you, and where are you?”I asked.

Bullets zipped through the air. I ducked as I realised they aimed the shots at me and I threw myself to the ground and watched as the window at the front crashed to the pavement outside. Splinters of glass scattered as another group of patrons ran from the cafe.

“In the bathroom, I’m going out of the window.”

Kane flung himself onto the ground to my right. “What the fuck is going on?”

“Lacey said they’re here for her.” I nodded to the men roaming around inside. “They look like vampires but could be human.”

“Why would humans come for her?” he said, scanning his eyes over the men.

“We’ll worry about that later. Right now, we need to get around the back. She’s with Zena and Safir, and they’re leaving from the bathroom window.”

“Do it, we’re on our way,”I said to Lacey.

Kane had already shimmied commando style across the narrow strip of grass behind the bushes we’d taken cover.

I followed in the same manner.

“What’s happening?” Ryan said, as we reached the end of the strip. He crouched down and luckily, the men hadn’t noticed as they continued firing at where we’d been hiding.

“They’re here for Lacey,” I said.

“Who?” he asked.

“We don’t know. The men look human, but they could be vampires,” Kane answered.

“She’s with Zena and Safir. They’re going to leave by the bathroom window,” I said. “I can’t believe I told her to wait for me. She could have got away, and she’d be safe by now.”

“Why did you say that?” Kane growled.

“Fuck off, Kane. She was in the bathroom, and I told her to stay there. I didn’t know at the time they were here for her.”

“Stop arguing and let’s find where the bathroom windows are,” Ryan hissed. “We can argue about what went wrong once she is safe.”

Running around the back of the coffee shop, but seeing a multitude of windows.

“Bloody hell. Which one is the bathroom?” I asked.

Ryan scanned the windows, looking across at the many windows. “Those two,” he said, pointing to two windows with obscure glazing.

“Lacey,” I shouted. “We’re here.”

“Seb, they’ve shot Zena. She needs an ambulance. I’ve been...”
