“Miss Summer, you’re testing my patience.”

I blew out a breath.

There was a way out of these binds and I needed to work it out quick before I had to make a deal with a vampire.

Chapter 13

Lacey

I’dnotslept.Infact, it was an impossibility. Hell, I had vampires around me. It surprised me when I finally got my heartbeat to beat at a normal rhythm again and not like an old, worn-out piece of machinery.

But after yet another unsuccessful attempt at releasing the binds, I spaced myself somewhere else as I tried to tune into Kane. He was my strongest bet. What we did that day when I was in the chamber proved that. But if he heard me, I wasn’t receiving any communication back. I closed my eyes and tried again.

If I could kick myself, I would, because Kane was probably doing what I asked him to, and that was making our baby the number priority. An agreement we made together, if dark forces were ever to capture me. Because I understood now that my death was more important than my life. Though, according to the vamp, he wanted to link us for eternity.

I sighed as I thought of that

“Can you help me, my gods?” I whispered to myself, because I was suddenly aware he must have left his guards in the room.

I mean, of course he had.

Not that they’d understand, they’d think I was talking to myself. Cursing myself.

And as though they answered me, I felt some movement over my ankles. A bolt of lightning soared through my body.

“Damn.” I grimaced as a pain surged through my wrists.

“Shush,” a man’s voice whispered in my ear. He ran a warm hand over my wrist. “Stay still.”

“You’re not one of my... Who are you?” And then I remembered being unsteady as I tried to fight the concoction in the cloth. Hoping I wasn’t about to be placed in a deep sleep again.

“You know... You called for me.”

My heart beat pounded crazily, making my chest rise and fall fast in my vulnerable position. He placed a large palm in the middle of my breasts, which made my body jerk as another surge of electricity ran through me.

His hand moved away, and I heard him rub it with his other hand.

“Calm yourself, I won’t hurt you,” he whispered.

I was in no position to use magic, and he knew it, but if he wanted to kill me, he was going to do it now.

“What are you doing?” I asked, hearing the grogginess in my voice. I pulled at my arms again, but didn’t get very far because of the binds.

“You’re hurting yourself. Relax and be quiet. I’d prefer to do this without having to fight or kill anybody,” he said. His voice was as sultry as I’d remembered.

“Oh,” I said. “Take my blindfold off and let me see you.”

In a flash, he was at my ear. “You are bossy, but so am I. Blindfold stays on and once I release you, do not remove it.”

“I can’t see you?” I asked with a huff.

He rumbled a laugh, and I sulked as his lips curved in a smile on my cheek. “No, you’re not ready for that. That time will come. Now let me get you free.”

“Okay,” I said resigned. “Maxim said he was giving me an hour, and we’d speak about his proposal again.”

“Then I have little time,” he said. I relaxed as he moved to my ankles again. “Let me get on.”

“Are you scared of him?” I asked.
