“No, but you’re shackled, and I still need to free you.”

I couldn’t see a thing, but felt each movement against my legs. He was swift, but there was an unmistakable growl with each brush of his thumb over my ankle as he soothed the bind that had grazed my skin.

I smiled at his sounds.

One leg came free. I brought my aching thigh to my stomach, stretching my arm over my bent knee. Running my finger over a sore patch.

“You’re smiling... not afraid?” he whispered into my ear.

“No. I’m smiling because you are groaning and growling like an annoyed bear.”

“He hurt you,” he said. “I could kill him.”

“It’s fine. I was more worried about his teeth. I can deal with scratches.”

His light fingers moved with surety and a deftness that was strangely soothing and a few minutes later he removed the shackles that bound my wrists and pulled me off the bed and into his arms.

My breath caught.

“Thank you,” I panted into his hard chest.

“We aren’t free yet,” he said with a small laugh.

“Oh yes, I’m still a little sleepy,” I said, trying to cover my stupid mistake.

“Mmm. Do you trust me?”

“You killed Polly and tried to kill Carter. I don’t know what you say is what you really want.”

“I told you I didn’t kill Polly, but I would have because she betrayed you. A demon killed her. Carter is different and I couldn’t let you go through with a joining ritual,” he said, sincerity laced his voice. “Lace... Do you trust me?”

I thought for a moment; he was here rescuing me. And yes, he could take me somewhere else and hold me there, but I called him for a reason.

And I trusted him a lot more than I did the King of the Vampires.

“Yes.”

“Thank you,” he whispered in my ear. Lifting me up by the bum. “Wrap your hands around my neck and straddle my waist.”

“Just take off my blindfold, and we can run for it. I can run pretty quickly.”

“And vampires can fly faster.” He pulled me closer, and I leaned my head into his neck. Smelling again his scent of sandalwood and something spicy. It was the same smell in the café. I leaned closer. Did he still smell of roses underneath that cologne smell?

Get a grip, Lacey. He is here to get you away from this place.

“Do what you need to do. I trust you.”

He walked a short distance, and a breeze drifted over my back. This wasn’t the door, this was a window.

Shit!

“It’s so cold,” I whispered.

He walked a short distance. There was a yank of cloth, which I assumed was the sheet from the bed. Then there was ripping before he took each of my arms and put them into holes and tied the material at the front.

“Better. I can’t cover your legs. They need to wrap around my waist.”

“Okay, that’s much better, thank you,” I said and smiled as he lifted me into his arms again and I felt the chilly air again and knew we stood at a window. He took a step forward, and I assumed this was a balcony now. Was he going to jump to the floor below?
