“Back at her home, the two of them stayed there for the week before Easter,” I said as I scanned the outside of the building the library was situated and could see several soldiers outside but couldn’t work out which kingdom they were in.

“Cosy,” Carter said.

“Mmm, but in his defence I was drinking beer with Blake. Whereas Kane was running around worrying about her. So I can’t get jealous over it, it was my fault and if I wasn’t being stupid, I would have done the same thing. Kicking myself, but I’ll never let my guard down again.”

“Kicking yourself for what?” Kane asked, flinging his body next to ours. “You’re still here,” he said to Carter.

“Yeah, Lacey sent me a message to say she was in trouble. I’m still a knight,” Carter hissed.

“Carter, if it’s the dark king. It might be best for you to go home,” Kane said.

“It isn’t. I’ve seen these soldiers before, and I’m trying to place them. They aren’t fae and we’ll soon know if they’re vampires. Angry vampires find it hard to not show themselves,” Carter said.

Another group of soldiers ran past where we shielded ourselves as Carter shimmied his way commando style to the edge of where we hid.

Just after he left, Blake threw his body down next to me. “What’s happening? I heard there’s a commotion at the library.”

“Yeah, and guess who is in the library?” I rolled my eyes at the sky.

Blake laughed a bit too hard. “Lacey,” he said, and kneeled and looked up to the library floor of the building before creeping to the end of the bushes for a better look.

Carter slowly made his way back to where we were hiding. “Okay, I think they’re from the dragon kingdom,” he said. “Not sure why they’ve travelled here from the West Country. They normally pick their battles with the elves and the harpies.”

“Harpies?” I asked.

“Forget that for now.” Kane interrupted. “The dragon’s major strengths, as far as I know, are flight, fire and brawn.”

“Carter, you’re back,” Blake said when he got back to where we sat. His voice was a mix of surprise and questioning.

“Yeah, lucky me. I picked today to speak to my lecturer, but I’m still a knight,” he said.

“Not when you can’t be around.” Blake countered and tilted his head to one side.

“Stop worrying about it Blake, from tomorrow I won’t be on campus anymore and Lacey is trying to have the bind removed, too. So I won’t be hindering your new position.”

“Glad to hear it,” Blake said with a sneer.

“Argue another time, you two. Today he is still a knight, and tomorrow he might not be. We have dragons on the campus and as they’re at the library, I expect they are here for Lacey,” Kane said, pointing to a dragon flying over.

“Yeah, don’t forget they have talons that can take a head off,” Carter said.

“Shit,” I said.

“Lacey, they’re dragons,” I transmitted a message to Lacey.

“Yeah, I know I’m staring at one through the window right now. Don’t come up here because soldiers are standing outside the library doors and I’ve put a barrier there.”

I looked up and saw the largest dragon, not that I’d seen many of them, but this was a beast.

Fuck, how were we going to defeat dragons?

“What are we going to do?” I asked.

“We need to get inside. Can anyone secretly fly?” Carter asked.

Kane glanced at me and then the Blake. “No, we can’t. We need to get in another way,” he said.

“She said she’s put a barrier on the door, and to stay where we are,” I said.
