“Was she?” Seb sighed.

I nodded. “Yeah, the whole night.”

“I feel fucking horrible that we plotted behind her back. We’re so bad at knowing what she needs. Everyone but Ryan, that is.”

“That’s why you’re jealous?”

“We spoke to each other telepathically from the beginning and I thought I was the one she’d fall for. Like all the other lives. We’ve always had this connection. But when she was injured, it was Ryan who felt her pain, and she got so close to him because of it. The kingdom offered to remove it in the chamber, but he refused.”

“Because he fears losing the tie with her,” I said.

“I think so. Lacey said he should get rid of it, but no, he rubs it in that it was the only way we knew what was happening because she didn’t call to any of us.” Seb tapped his head and I realised he meant telepathically.

“At least it was Ryan and not the dark king,” I said with a laugh.

Seb raised his eyes. “She’s convinced he saved her from the crazed driver. She said he appeared, and we heard her say his name, but it seemed unbelievable. We told her it was a good samaritan.”

“I suppose he speaks to her, so it is possible.”

“Clay wants her to go back in to the chamber and have that dealt with too.”

“And is she?”

“No,” he said.

“Interesting.”

“It is. One day she was slamming cupboards in the kitchen and wanting to kill him and today she's kissing him.” Seb hesitated, his eyes narrowed. “Come to think of it, he told her he was Ryan, and that’s why she was angry that day. If the dark king said he was me, she might have believed him. Can you see why I’m jealous?”

I burst out laughing. “You’re overthinking it.”

“Beer,” Seb said, opening the fridge and taking two bottles out.

“One won’t harm,” I said as Seb opened a drawer and snapped the caps off the bottles with an opener. “Where will they be?”

“Cuddling her in her room, if he can get away with it,” Seb said, rolling his eyes to the ceiling.

“You need to stop the jealousy you have of him. You’re more than just a knight.”

“I was fine, but it’s changed since Carter’s gone. He and Kane were both possessive of her, so she came to me for the fun, flirty stuff and Ryan for talking to and everything else. But because Carter isn’t here, and she is feeling his loss and I feel I’m losing her again because she goes to Ryan more for the comfort. Which is annoying because they’ve only just got back on track.”

I raised my eyes, waiting for him to go on. “Don’t be doing anything stupid. It’s too early to know if history is going to repeat itself.”

“I’m not. Ryan was not part of the picture in the past, him and Carter are new.”

“So they are our unknowns. Does Kane remember?”

“I’m not sure. He is acting the same way with her as he always did, but if he remembers anything, he is keeping it to himself and I can’t say anything.”

“Because you fear what the Gods will do?” I asked. He nodded. “Understandable. Does Lacey have any ideas about who you are?”

Seb shook his head. “I think Clay knows, but it’s all going to come out soon. What happened today has escalated that.”

“Don’t be doing anything stupid because if the Dark King thinks you’ll take her life again, he will kill you to prevent that this time. I expect he knows you are the one that does that.”

“He can’t kill me,” Seb said.

“How do you know things aren’t different?” I pushed.
