Seb nodded. “I don’t know how he did it. I know she picked me every other time, and I thought she did this time. Next thing she is telling us about her and Kane.”

“Were you mad? I suppose it’s a different type of bind to one they expect her to have with her knights.”

“I was furious at first, but the more I thought of it. I was fine because I hope this life is different because of it. Hopefully...” he trailed off.

“You know that has to include me for it to work?” I said, dipping my chin and looking through the top of my eyelashes at him. “You need to persuade the others.”

“What about Jack?”

I shook my head. “I’m trying to steer him toward Zena. She’s keen on him. But this should only be her three angels. That’s how it worked. This one is no different, apart from Kane got in first. The gods played that one well.” I laughed. "Jack would like to believe he is fated to her, but we can't allow him to find out."

“That was my payback and believe me, there were plenty of arguments over the two of you. Kane and her always argued, and it was mainly about you and Jack. It riled him. But to be honest, it surprised me she didn’t end up with you both because she thought we were immature arseholes,” Seb said with a laugh. “I’m assuming you did something wrong, too.”

“She saw a picture of another girl,” I said and shrugged my shoulders and tried to recall back.

“Oh, she knew you had a reputation,” I said.

“Unfounded.”

Seb raised his eyes. “Rumours were rife.”

“But not true,” I said. “Anyway, I don’t think we did anything else wrong. We were heavy on the sexual innuendos, though. Maybe that put her off, too. Or Clay?” I said.

“Clay was pushing her to bind with Carter once she chose us, I suppose.”

“How is Carter?” I had been wondering how he still fit with everything.

“She doesn’t talk about him. I think it’s too hard for her. Clay offered to have her put into the chamber and take away her memory of him.”

“Clay can do that?”

“Come in and have a coffee,” Seb said. It’s getting cold. “You’re her knight too. I’ll fill you in on everything.”

I nodded and shut the engine on the car and walked to the house. “Clay can remove her memories?” I said, though my voice was quiet. I didn’t want Lacey to hear we were discussing her.

“Didn’t you hear? That’s what he did just over a year ago. He let her believe Carter had cheated on her. Lacey and Carter were boyfriend and girlfriend and planning to have sex for the first time. Clay drugged her and until two days before she bound with Carter, she believed he had cheated on her.”

“What happened two days before?”

“She went into the chamber and had her memory restored.”

“Oh,” I said.

“It was that because she also saw the memory of her parents on the mortuary slab,” Seb said, and sighed. “It all happened on the same night.”

“Coincidence?” I asked.

“That’s not what Lacey believes. The night she went to your apartment was because we were discussing her. She and Kane worked some magic between them, because she heard Clay saying he wanted to remove some of the genuine memory with a second drug. Anyway, she transmitted everything she saw to Kane and when she came out thought she remembered everything, including her parents being alive.”

“Fucking hell,” I said.

“Lower your voice. Her hearing is amazing if she wants to listen in.”

“Sorry,” I whispered. “Go on.”

“When she came out Kane didn’t see what she remembered, and he told her she transmitted her collapsing in a heap on the floor. Clay came, picked her up and took her away.”

“That’s why she was having nightmares that night she stayed,” I said.
