“Okay, then he also knows if he kills me, Lacey will hate him, and he doesn’t want that. He can only fulfil what he believes is true if she loves him, although her kissing him today is a worry.”

“One kiss more than he has ever got before. I imagine if you tried to kill her this time, he will try to kill you beforehand,” I said.

“I won’t kill her. Each life she has evolved and so have I. The first life ended because she was mine, but marrying the God of Speed, not because of the dark king. The second life Kane and I were both her lovers, but her life ended because the dark king was going to take her.”

“And the next life,”

“It got harder, the gods sending you as a new protector and then the dark king was trying to take her as she slept. But you know that the threat you made in the last life is over. You have to be prepared to share her with Kane and I this time. Because it’s the dark king who is our enemy now. And we have to come together and protect our goddess. Because this life is different again. The kings want her, her knights want her, the dark king still wants her.”

“Only her knights have her at the moment.”

“Should I tell her who I am? That I was her very first lover in her first life? She always loved me more than everyone else.”

I gave Seb a small smile. “That you’re a fallen angel. Cast out the day you killed her. Raphael warned you,” I said.

“Ah fuck.”

“And now she knows the dark king has wings. She’ll think you are the dark king.” I grinned.

“Yeah, and Ryan will help put that snippet of doubt in her mind. He has already wondered about me because I don’t have a specific magic like he does.”

“You can fly. Tell him you are an elemental or maybe you are the dark king and that is how you’ve been in every life.” I raised an eyebrow and Seb pursed his lips in annoyance.

“I'm not the dark king.” Seb raised his eyes. “Another beer? Sleep on the sofa,” he said.

“Okay,” I said, happy to be sleeping close to Lacey again.

Chapter 17

Lacey

Isoaredthroughtheskies, the feeling of being so free as the air breezed by my face and my hair whipped hard around my head. Not moving my arms that wrapped hard around his neck. I ran my nose up the column of his throat and breathed in his masculine scent, embedding his smell forever on my brain.

I reached my mouth to kiss his jaw, but there was nothing there.

And I fell... plummeted to the floor.

With a quick jerk, I opened my sleepy eyes and sat up in my bed. Peering around and a shadow darkened the bedroom as something passed the streetlight outside.

Was it him?

The man in the shadows, the man in my dreams, the man that had suddenly become so very real.

My heartbeat pumped wildly, and I didn’t know if it was anticipation or fear. I jumped out of bed and pulled the curtains open, but there was nothing around. The street was empty, nothing but stationary cars on the road.

It might have been a vampire.

Shit!

I drew the curtains shut again, picked up my mobile to send a quick text message to Zena, but noticed the time and the fact she’d be in hospital. I’d need to visit her tomorrow instead. Placing my mobile on the bedside table, I shrugged a dressing gown over my shoulders and left my bedroom for a drink of water.

Not wanting to wake Seb and Ryan. I already knew Kane was still at Clay’s after calling him last night. And as much as it hurt me, he wasn’t here when I got back. He’d done as I asked and protected Aria if anyone captured me.

I hated the agreement, especially finding out what my mum did to Clay. Would Kane do the same to me and take Aria to a safer place?

That thought made a lump stick in my throat, because if the past was going to repeat itself. He would. He’d find another mum for my baby because I wouldn’t be around to bring her up, and the more I thought about it, I knew what I had to do.

I had no choice.
