A screeching noise scratched into my brain like a blunt knife sliding across a plate. We looked up to see the dragon using his talon to run a line around the window’s edge.

“Oh fuck,” I whispered.

Blake stood up but remained behind the bush as he watched. I moved beside him and looked up again to see Lacey at the window, and she was running her finger around, sealing what he had done. The dragon reared back for a moment, tilted his head to one side, and stared at her.

And roared.

Her eyes glowed gold, and she smiled.

The dragon turned away from Lacey, dipped low, swooping as he spread his wings and flew like an eagle behind us. We twisted around to see what his next move was. He'd stopped high in the sky, floating in the air, his wings outstretched as the sunlight bounced on them, making the black flanks look like silver feathers.

“He’s going to fly into the window,” I said to Lacey.

“I’m waiting for his dragon soldiers to appear because they’ve left the door,” she replied.

I passed Lacey’s message to the others. “The door is free. Should we try to get in?”

“Let’s wait and see what she does. I think Lacey has this. I have a feeling,” Blake said.

“Feelings won’t save her,” Kane hissed.

“Trust her,” Blake said. “We know she is more powerful than any of us. If I’m wrong, we can then help her.”

An awful, unnatural sound hit pierced my ears. It was like the roar of hundreds of bees gliding through the air. I spun around and watched as the dragons flew around in a circle as they decided what to do.

I twisted to Lacey. She hadn’t moved as she stood at the window with her arms in the same magic mode as she used on New Year’s Eve. She remained motionless, but staring ahead. A look of contemplation in her gaze.

“Get everyone away from the pavement underneath the windows. I’d prefer the glass not to come inwards,” she said.

“The pathway is already empty. I think most people have disappeared or gone into hiding.”

“Thanks.”Her arms raised, she said something to herself and flicked her fingers and the glass in front of her popped out. Crashing to the ground below.

“Good work, but you’ll get a bill for that,” I said with a laugh.

She laughed back. “I’ll send it to Clay. I’m sure he is already funding this place. And here they come.”

My head twisted behind me again. “Shit,” I said. Hearing a roar of now angry bees. All lined in single formation as they snaked through the air and towards the windows.. towards Lacey.

A roar came across the sky and the first five dragon soldiers continued to fly directly to Lacey, but she didn’t move. She raised her hands toward them and the first dragon retaliated with a firebomb that appeared to blast from his mouth.

My heart thumped in my chest as the fire ball closed in on her. Closer and closer.

“Oh shit,” Carter muttered.

“She’ll be fine. She needs to do this to believe in herself,” Blake whispered as he watched Lacey.

Lacey stared at the firebomb. Soon it lost power and fizzled to the floor.

She didn’t dip her head like she did the day when she called the gods. In fact, her entire demeanour was different. Her shoulders were back and her hands were by her side. Staring directly ahead, and there was no fear in her stare. This was badass Lacey and the girl I loved looked like she didn’t have a fearful bone in her body.

“You can do this, Lacey,” I whispered.I believed in her, but I needed to believe it myself.

The first dragon in formation reared his head and Lacey’s eyes glowed liquid gold in response. An almighty roar boomed over the sky, and he dipped his head forward as fire blasted from his mouth—only one hundred metres away... eighty metres... fifty metres.

“Do something Lacey,” I whispered.

She pushed her arms to him, and they were straight in line with the dragons. A deluge of water blasted over him. “Yes,” I whooped as his fire extinguished and the roar turned into a splutter of sorts. The water kept coming from her hands, covering two more dragons. Each flew off like rain soaked budgies, with sodden, sorry wings hanging heavy from their torsos.
