One vampire swung his fist. When I heard an “oomph.” I knew he’d hit Ryan.

The vampire turned and grinned at me. I shook my head as he neared me. There was no way I was letting another vampire anywhere close to my neck. I held my hands out to him and curled my fingers to draw him closer, and smirked.

But I averted my eyes from him. Looking above, my mouth dropped into an O.

The wings.

His wings spanned from his back, and I gasped, trying to take in air.

Who are you?

Oh, no.

My eyes flicked back to the man nearing me. He swooped in the air and it was a good job this room was large because there was no way those wings would have worked in any other room.

He flashed one wing into the face of the vampire, knocking him clean out and there was no way my eyes could have got much rounder, but they felt as though they were about to rip at the seams as I watched him get closer to me.

He enveloped my body within his and his dark wings wrapped so neatly encasing me.

“Stay there,” he growled when I tried to push my way out, but he totally cocooned me inside him. “Blake will deal with them.”

And I didn’t know how long I was there, but I stood motionless as I thought of what this meant. My hand ran over his chest and up to his jaw.

Did he feel the same? Was this the man who saved me from Maxim before?

Had I already fallen in love with the dark king?

Chapter 20

Lacey

Dark, rugged, leatherywingsoverlapped behind me, I stared up at his face as he and his wings enveloped my body. My heart rate raced and blood pounded through my veins as I stared at the man who now towered at least a foot taller than me.

The dark king.

Just thinking about it and my heartbeat sounded into a high crescendo in my ears, eliminating every noise around me, but I shook myself out of the fear and pushed him again.

He didn't move.

That pissed me off as normally I would have no trouble getting out of anybody's grasp, but his strength was more than I ever would have thought. Ever been told. But with another burst of anger, I put both of my palms against his rib cage and thrust against his sturdy, hard muscles.

"Stay there,” he growled. He wasn’t moving. He perfectly swaddled me in his solid barrier of muscles. “Blake will deal with them.”

I remained still for a time, at least apart from my pulse, which was thrashing erratically under the palms that were holding each side of my neck, and if I didn’t calm down soon, my heart could give up.

I peered up again, glimpsing his face and shaking my head.

Why didn’t I realise I had already fallen in love with the dark king?

The observations he made and the visions I saw. From my current life, where he was there right at the start, to everything from my history as my lives flashed in front of my mind. I remembered.

“I’m not the dark king?” Seb growled into my ear. “I know that’s what you’re thinking.”

I didn’t answer him immediately. I closed my eyes and passed my palm over his ample chest and up to his jaw.

Did he feel the same?

Deven?
