Nothing.

“Ryan.” My voice raised as I pushed on his body.

Nothing.

Fuck.

I rolled him onto his back.

His eyes were closed as though he was still in a deep sleep, his mouth ajar, like he was gasping for air. I touched his skin. It seemed damp and cold. I swallowed back the clog in my throat.

As I wondered how long… he’d been dead.

I wanted to scream at him for hurting Lacey as he did, but I would never get that chance.

I wished I could.

He wasn’t a fated mate, and this was going to break Lacey’s heart.

He took her pain just as Clay said he would.

Why did he do it?

He knew.

I checked the pulse in his neck one more time.

Nothing.

Standing at the door to my bedroom, Lacey’s head was on Seb's shoulder as he held Aria, who was now content and asleep in his arms. I didn’t want to ruin their moment together, and quietly slinked away.

I strolled into the office and picked up the phone, dialled a private number which was only to be used in emergencies. Was it an emergency?

He was dead.

I blew out a breath and glanced at the garden, but could see my reflection in the glass. There was anguish in my gaze. I should have insisted harder that she didn’t bind with Ryan. I should have made her understand he wasn’t a fated mate.

I knew all along that he wasn’t an angel. He wasn’t one of us.

“Hello,” Clay said. His voice went up at the end in surprise.

“Hi Clay, it’s Kane. We have a situation.”

“Ryan died?” he asked. At least, I assumed he asked. Perhaps he knew too.

I dropped my head back and looked at the ceiling.

Of course, he knew.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“How is Lacey?”

“She doesn’t know yet. She thought she left him sleeping.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. Clay’s breathing was resonant and deep sounding, and I knew he was concerned about his daughter.

“Should I tell her?” I asked.
