“Yes, I’m on my way,” he said.

I dropped the phone on the desk and made my way back to Lacey.

Seb caught my eye first, and I gave him a gentle nod. Seb’s eyes narrowed, seeing me raise my eyes to the ceiling. I gave my head a slight shake.

Seb knew in an instant what it meant.

“Lacey, I need to speak to you,” I said. She smiled as her eyes glanced at me.

“Just a minute,” she said, taking Aria and wrapping my sleeping baby in a blanket and placing her in her crib.

“Upstairs, you too Seb,” I said, and turned to find Maggie behind me.

“Do you need any help with Aria this morning?” she asked.

I nodded. “We will. She’s asleep and already fed, but we’ll need more of your help for a while.”

She placed a soft hand over my arm and smiled, and I had a feeling she already knew.

Lacey and Seb followed me up the stairs, and once we were in his bedroom, Lacey walked over to Ryan.

“He’s still asleep?” she asked, her voice raised in surprise.

I shook my head. “Lacey, I’m sorry, but Ryan died in his sleep.” I didn’t want to say he probably died of the bind. There was no other reason for a healthy guy like Ryan to die. He took her pain, and it was too much for someone who wasn’t a fated mate.

Lacey rushed to sit by Ryan and held his body tight, rocking him, her mouth to his ear.

“Ryan,” she said, “are you getting up?”

But his eyes were blank, and no words were going to change that.

“Wake up, Ryan,” she murmured, as though she thought she had some magic that would wake him with her words. As if she could make him come alive.

“Lacey,” I whispered, and swallowed back my own tears. “He’s gone.”

“Ryan!” she screamed and shook her head, bashing his chest with her closed fists. “Wake up.”

Seb wrapped his arms around her shoulders, taking hold of her hands, and pulled her back to his chest. I walked over and held her to me. Her body convulsed as anguish ripped through her. Seb and I held her tightly between us, him at her back and me at her chest. Finally, she flopped between us and her tears fell.

Chapter 30

Blake

IlistenedtoJackon the mobile as he spoke to Clay, and now I knew Lacey was on her way.

“Oh fuck,” Jack said, and I spun my head to him. “Okay, thanks for forewarning me.”

Jack chewed his lip as he placed the mobile on the table. “Ryan died during binding. Lacey is furious with herself and wants me to help bring him back."

Jack had the special magic of time, and she knew he was the one person who could bring Ryan back. “And Clayton, what did he ask you?” I asked.

Seb and I agreed I would stop Jack and Lacey from becoming close again.

“He told me I couldn’t bring him back, not to weaken,” he said and turned his back to me.

“You can’t fall for whatever she says to you. Clay will kill you if you go against him,” I said.

Jack twisted and stared at me in a way that was impossible to read. Something I couldn’t work out was hidden behind his eyes.
