Acrash sounded out, the table shaking as Duncan slammed his fist onto it. Jay and I instinctively reached forward to grab our waters to make sure they didn’t fall over from the impact.

“That fucking prick!” The words came out of Duncan’s mouth in a fearsome snarl, one that caught the attention of some nearby diners.

“Easy, D,” I said. I was trying to keep calm, but it wasn’t easy. Fact of the matter was that I’d never seen Duncan that mad before. Between the three of us, he’d always been the one who’d had the easiest time keeping a cool head. Seeing him like that was strange as all hell.

I couldn’t blame him though. When Jay had told me about what Dream had said about Adam, wringing that smarmy little shit’s neck had been the first thing to appear in my mind.

Mel hurried over, a worried expression on her face.

“You guys alright?”

I glanced over at Duncan. His jaw worked; his eyes fixed forward in an expression of pure anger.

“We’re alright,” he said. “Just got some news I’m not happy about.” He closed his eyes hard, then turned to Mel with a softened expression on his face. “Sorry to make a scene. It’s all good now, Mel.”

Worry faded from her face at Duncan’s words. “Just let me know if there’s anything I can do, OK guys? And I don’t just mean bringing you more coffee.” She placed her hand on Duncan's big shoulder and gave it a motherly squeeze before departing.

“Fucking hell,” Duncan said, his tone lower. I could sense that while he was doing his best not to freak out in the middle of the restaurant, he was still pissed as all hell.

“It’s over,” Jay piped up. “Dream got away from him. She’s back in town and where we can look after her, make sure no asshole like him gets anywhere near her.”

Duncan clenched his jaw again. “But he’s still out there. Hell – he’s from Charmed Bay. Odds are good that he’ll be back for one reason or another eventually.”

“Then we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, dude,” I said. It was weird talking to Duncan like that, trying to calm him down. It was usually him taking on that role.

“But if he does,” Duncan said, “I’ll crack that shithead’s skull.” There was no doubt in my mind that he meant his words. If Adam had happened to walk into the diner at that moment, he probably wouldn’t have made it three steps in before Duncan took him apart limb-by-limb.

He clenched his fists so hard that his hands looked like big stones. Then he unclenched them, closing his eyes, and taking a deep breath.

“I need to go,” he said. “Need to clear my head.”

Without another word, and without waiting for a response, he shot up and stormed out of the diner. I watched as he stepped through the door and made his way down the road, disappearing down the nearest block.

“Can’t blame him one damn bit,” Jay said as he topped off his coffee. “When she told me about Adam and what he’d done to her…” His face flashed with anger as he recalled the words. “But yeah, no sense in getting worked up about it – it’s in the past.”

“He’s right, though,” I said. “What if Adam comes back to town? Starts some shit?”

Jay shrugged. “Then we take care of it when it happens. And we make damn sure that he doesn’t get a chance to hurt her again. He’s already shown what kind of a man he is, and we’re not going to take any chances.”

I shoved down another big bite of food, feeling more restored with each bit I got into me. The physical part of the hangover was going away. But it was beginning to be replaced with regret at what had happened between us and Dream.

“He was right about the other shit, too,” I said. “That was dumb. We shouldn’t have come onto her so hard and so fast.”

Jay smirked over his meal. “We? I was out there talking to her. You’re the one who sauntered up like God’s gift and laid down all those lame lines. You’re lucky she’s into us as much as we’re into her – can’t imagine that cheeseball game of yours working on any girl who’s not already sold.”

I laughed, picking up a small piece of onion ring and whipping it in his direction. He caught it and popped it into his mouth.

“Hey, when I came outside you two were getting nice and cozy together. Pretty sure that if I’d come out a few minutes later you’re the one who would’ve made the first move instead of me.”

He said nothing as he chewed his onion ring and swallowed.

“Well, so what? What’s done is done.”

I nodded. “True. And I know what Duncan said, but damn, it doesn’t sound right.”

“What? The part about waiting for her to come to us?”
