As I get closer, her eyes search mine. She knows I’m pissed. But she’s no less angry now than she was earlier either. As soon as I reach her, I pick her up and slam my lips on hers. Her legs capture my waist, and I walk around the side of the car, pressing her against the door.

Pulling away, I growl into her mouth, “Don’t ever fucking scare me like that again. Do you have any idea what you just did?”

“Why were you scared? I’m a perfectly good driver. Your car doesn’t even have a scratch on it.”

“I wasn’t worried about the fucking car, Holly. I was worried about you.”

“Huh, bet that didn’t feel good, now, did it?”

“Not at all.” She stares at me. It takes a little while for the meaning behind her words to click. “Fuck, I’m sorry. I won’t ever do anything like that again. I really was just trying to get you to overcome your fear of guns. That’s all.”

“I didn’t like the idea that something was going to happen to you. I just found you, Theo. I’m not ready to let you go.”

“Good, because I’m never going to be able to let you go.” I fuse my lips with hers. I can’t get enough. “Don’t ever steal my car again, Holly. If anyone else tried that, they’d be meeting a very early death.”

“I’m sorry I took your car. But don’t worry… I’m going to buy my own. Maybe something even faster than this thing.”

“No. You should have… like a little hatchback or something. Better yet, let me give you Loui. He can drive you wherever you need to go in the SUV. It’s the safest car I own.”

“I’m not taking your driver. And I’m not buying a hatchback.” She untangles her legs from my waist when a throat clears behind us. “How are you not dead yet?” Holly asks Neo.

“Sorry to disappoint you, sweetheart. I’m like a cat, nine lives and all.”

“No, I mean, I shot you. Did I miss and you just pretended to get hit?”

“Nope, you got me right here.” Neo lifts his shirt to show the bruise he’s sporting.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Well, actually, I’m not. Really, you bloody deserved it,” Holly says as she steps closer to inspect his injury. “You should probably put some ice or something on that.” Her hand reaches out to touch his chest.

And like hell am I letting that happen. I grab her around the waist and spin her around. “You know, I’m injured too. I could use some ice and someone to nurse me back to health.” I point to the gash on my head, then the dried-up blood stuck to my hair.

“What the bloody hell, Theo? You should be at the hospital. You probably need stitches and a tetanus shot. Get in the car.” She turns to Neo. “Why didn’t you make him go to the hospital?”

“Because we were busy chasing your crazy ass down, babe.”

“Holly. Her name is fucking Holly, Neo,” I yell at my cousin.

“Sorry, my bad. Because we were busy chasing your crazy ass down,Holly!” Neo holds up his hands in surrender. “Anyway, if you’re good, I’m out. It’s a long trip back to the city.”

“Yeah, sure, we’re heading back to my place now too.”

“Great. Lovely to see you as always, Holly.” Neo walks to his SUV. I know he won’t actually drive away until he knows we’re also on the road. He’s not likely to leave me out in the middle of nowhere without back-up.

“Get in.” I open the passenger’s side door of the car, but Holly doesn’t move. She just stares at me, like she’s waiting for something. “Please,” I add in a softer tone.

“Was it that hard?” she asks, passing me to get inside.

“Nope.” I shut the door, maybe a little more forcefully than I should. My anger over the events of the past few hours is rising again, now that the relief has dissipated.

I pull out of the car park, the wheels spinning as we turn onto the road. The next hour of the trip is silent, neither of us wanting to speak first.

Once we cross the Brooklyn Bridge, Holly breaks the tension. “Can you just drop me at my apartment? Or anywhere really. I can call for an Uber.”

I look over at her. She’s lost her damn mind if she thinks I’ll ever drop her off to get a fucking Uber. But I’m interrupted by my phone ringing before I can respond to tell her as much. “Fuck!” I hit the steering wheel. “Whatever you hear right now, I need you to keep your mouth shut. Do not make a sound.” It’s the only warning I give her before I hit answer, and her glare says exactly how she feels about that. “Pops, what’s happening?”

“Son, why is it that I’m hearing how you and Neo were fucking around all over the goddamn state today? What happened?”

Shit.“Nothing happened. Neo and I made a bet. That’s all it was. I won, obviously.”
