The waiter walked over and placed our food in front of us. I picked up my fork, took a bit of my steak fettuccine, and then looked at him. “You love your mother.”

“That’s a given.”

“Yeah, but you like, love your mother. You are a total mama’s boy.” He turned and looked at his mom. “Okay.” We both ate our food. He looked back at me. “What else?”

“You’re a fighter.”

He looked down at his knuckles. “Maybe I just got in a fight. What makes you think I am a fighter?”

I looked down at his hands. “You still have lines from your hands being wrapped.”

He gave me a grin, putting another bite of steak into his mouth, watching me, trying to figure me out. After a few minutes, he nodded. “I street fight. Anything else?”

I twirled my fork in my noodles and took a bite. “You’re left-handed.”

“Well, that’s easy, I have been eating with my left hand.”

I shook my head. “No, I figured it out before our food came.”

“And how, please tell me? I am on the edge of my seat.”

“Because I know you also like to draw.”

“Now how on earth did you guess that?” I leaned forward, running the tip of my finger along the callus on his left pointer finger. “Well, aren’t you a clever little Vixen?”

“I said no pet names.”

He smiled and nodded, looking down at his plate. The two of us finished off our food and the waiter took our plates and refilled our drinks.

“So how do we get out of this?”

He looked at me and shook his head. “At this time, I see no way out of it. Those men upstairs are going to all make sure this is seen through.”

“Men.” I rolled my eyes, taking a sip from my drink. “I don’t need you to run my family business. I can do it on my own.”

He laughed. “A woman will never have a seat at that table.”

I leaned forward on the table. “We’ll see about that. I will go through with this, only because I fully intend to rule over this city when the time comes. And for now, I don't have any other options. If you get in the way of that, I will kill you.”

He leaned forward, a few inches from my face. “I have a couple of things I would like you to get straight. I have zero desire to rule over the Volante outfit and zero desire to marry you. Frankly, you're not my type. And this little arrangement that has been made, puts a kink in my plans. I will play this game for now. But if you get in my way, Vixen, I won't hesitate to slice that pretty little throat of yours.”

“Well then,” I held my hand out to him, “until death do us part.”

He laughed, shaking my hand. “Until death do us part.”
