IfollowedNickinto the locker room, where he grabbed a set of athletic shorts and a t-shirt out of a locker, handing them to me. “Thanks.”

He nodded. “Thanks for standing up for Alora. No one does that, not with Gabriele.” He turned and walked out of the gym.

I kicked my shoes off, folded up my suit, and put it in one of the empty lockers. Did no one ever stand up for her with her dad? I guess that would make sense. None of the men would ever stand up to my dad either. I shook my head and finished changing, walking out in socks since I didn't have tennis shoes with me. I walked over to one of the punching bags and started wailing on it.

“Do you need gloves or wraps?” Nick walked up and asked.

I shook my head. “No, I only use them in fights.”

“Don’t your hands get messed up?”

I shrugged. “Sometimes.”

He grabbed the bag, holding it steady as I went to town, punching it.

“Nick, will you come tape me?” I turned to see Alora walking out. She had on tight leggings and a tight black tank top. You could see every curve of her body, including her butt.

I never realized how nice it was, hidden in everything else I had seen her wear so far. I turned and focused on the punching bag before me. The last twenty-four hours had been a nightmare and wailing into something was just what I needed.

I heard someone yell, “against a real man.” I looked up to see some guy look at me and then at Alora. I looked at him, then her. She walked past him, shoving him in the shoulder, getting into a fighting stance.

I walked over and stood next to Nick. “What is going on?”

He shook his head. “Michael challenged Alora to spar.” He shook his head. A few more guys had walked over, standing around us.

“Is she going to spar with him?”

Nick nodded. “Yeah, idiot.”

“Well yeah, he’s twice her size, why would she do that? I’m going to stop her. Alora, bad idea.” She looked at me and shook her head.

Nick looked at me. “I didn't mean she was an idiot. I meant he was. Just watch.”

I watched as they circled each other, Alora had a big smile on her face. He stepped forward, throwing his right fist. She dodged, and swung around, kicking him in the ribs. He lunged forward with a laugh, nodding his head. “Okay princess.”

“Kick his ass AL!” Nick yelled.

“He calls her princess?” I asked.

Nick nodded. “Yeah, it’s an insult. They can't stand each other.”

He threw a punch again, and she blocked, taking it on her arm. Throwing her right fist, catching him on the jaw. He swung, catching her on the left cheek. I cringed knowing it had to hurt her already throbbing cheek. “Does she always get in and fight with all of you?”

“Yes, she’s been training right alongside us since she was twelve.”

“Twelve?”

“It took her two years to convince her dad to let her start then.”

I watched as he spun around, grabbing her around the neck from behind. She pushed her chin down into his arm. His hand came up pulling his other arm tighter into her. She reached up pulling on his arm trying to bend forward. She was struggling. I stepped forward and Nick grabbed my shoulder and shook his head. I sighed and stood there. Suddenly she lunged to the side and swung her arm down fast, hitting him in the sack. He yelled and bent forward. Her arm swung up, elbowing him in the face. She swung out from under his arm and spun around him kicking him in the back of the knee, grabbing him around the neck. Her teeth were showing, grit together as she somehow held the weight of his body, her arm tight around his neck, slowly lowering him to the ground. He grabbed her arm, trying to pull it away, but she pulled harder. He tried one last time, then finally tapped her arm twice. She let go, letting him fall to the ground. Everyone around us clapped.

“And that is why I didn't let you step in.” Nick smiled, a laugh escaping his lips.

She looked up at me, her chest rising and falling fast. “Bad idea, huh?”

“Or maybe,” I pointed to the guy still on the ground, “this guy is just soft.”
