I smiled and nodded, standing up. I walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, seeing a picture on the bedside table. I reached over and picked it up. “Is this you?”
She turned around. “Uh yeah.”
“Your mom was beautiful.”
She ran some makeup over her eyes, and then her eyelashes. She sprayed her face with something and stood up. Walking over, she grabbed the picture from my hand. “Yes, she was. Too bad.” She frowned and set it back on the table.
“Too bad what?”
She shook her head. “Nothing, we should go, or we’ll be late.” She turned and walked out the door, grabbing a sweater and throwing it on. I followed behind her.
Gabriele was standing at the front door as we walked down the stairs. “Alora, please remember your place tonight. Don’t embarrass this family at dinner.” He grabbed her arm, and jerked her to him, making her stumble slightly on her heels. He whispered something into her ear. I took a step toward them. He pulled away and looked at me before walking to the hallway.
She took a deep breath in and walked towards the door. Making our way out, Nick was standing in front of a black SUV, he opened the door. “Nick, we can drive ourselves. We don’t need a chaperone.”
Nick looked at her. “Gabriele insisted we go as your bodyguards.”
“We?” She asked.
The guy she had fought with earlier, stood up from the passenger seat. “Yes, we.” He looked at Alora with a smile, then gave me a dirty look.
“Fine,” Alora sighed, walking and climbing into the back seat.
I climbed in scooting next to her. “What did he whisper to you?”
She shook her head. “Just something he tells me all the time. Something he’s been telling me my whole life.”
I looked at her, making a circle with my hand. “And?”
“And none of your business.”
Nick pulled away, driving out of the gates and into the city. The guy in the passenger seat kept glancing up in the rearview mirror giving me dirty looks. I had finally had enough. “Is there something you would like to say to me, pencil dick?”
He looked forward, his hands fisted in his lap. “Nope.”
I sighed and shook my head.
