Alora Age 10

Iwasrunningaround outside, Max chasing me and knocking me down. Jumping on top of me licking my face. I giggled. "Max get off of me!" He jumped up and down, panting, his tongue out. "Okay come on. We better get in and do school or Elena will be mad."

I ran back towards the house, Max on my heels. Elena was standing at the door, hands crossed to her chest. "And where have you been, young lady?"

"We were playing and I lost track of time."

She shook her head. "Well, you better hurry up and head into the school room before your dad finds out."

"Okay." I walked in behind her.

"Max stays with me."

I frowned and bent down hugging him. "I will see you after school." I jumped up and ran down the hallway to the school room, sitting down at my desk next to Nick.

Nick shook his head, whispering. "You can’t keep being late. Mr. Davers is going to tell your dad."

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, I'm not scared."

"You should be."

Nick was always telling me what to do, always trying to make me follow the rules. He was my cousin and my best friend, but he also really got on my nerves sometimes.

"Oh Mrs. Volante, how nice of you to join us."

"Sorry, Mr. Davers."

"Open your book, you can read first today."

I nodded and grabbed my book as Nick and the rest of the kids laughed. I stood up glancing up at the other kids. Nick, Liz, and Michael are the kids of some of dad's other men. The four of us all did school together four hours a day, Monday through Friday. Nick and Michael would then go to the training house and do whatever it was they did there. I had tried to sneak into there a bunch but would always get caught. Dad would yell at me and tell me the training center was no place for a girl.

“In trouble again, mafia princess?” Michael whispered as I walked by. I stuck my tongue out at him, making my way to the front of the class. I finished reading and took my seat as Mr. Davers talked about the revolutionary war. We moved on to math and then our other subjects before finishing for the day.

"So why were you late today?" Nick asked as we walked out.

"I got sidetracked playing with Max and lost track of time."

He shook his head. "You have to stop. Your dad is not going to be happy."

I elbowed him. "You worry too much."

"You don’t worry enough."

I giggled. "You know, you sound like an old man instead of a kid?"

"Al, just do what your dad asks you to do. I know what you’re trying to do, but it will just make things harder for you."

"What is it I am trying to do?"

"Get your dad's attention. But you're going to push it too far one day."

"I'm not worried."

"ALORA!" I heard my dad's voice behind us. I turned around, scared, he was not happy.

"Yes, daddy?"

"In my office now. Nick get to the training center."
