He let out a sigh of relief. His face went back to its normal hardness all of us carried. “She is my niece.” He sat down on one of the couches, gesturing for me to sit as well.

I took the seat across from him. “Yeah but, you don't act like it normally. When we came and saw you the other day, you hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. Every other time I had seen the two of you together, you seemed very indifferent to her.”

He sighed, “it’s complicated. Now tell me what you’re talking about.”

“I have woken her up twice now from nightmares, and she reacts as if I am trying to hurt her when she comes to. I have seen this behavior before, from girls who have been in sex trafficking. Did something happen to her?”

A frown washed across his face, he stood up and walked over to the window. “A couple of years ago Alora was out and thought she had seen her old Nanny. She followed her into a building and was grabbed by two men. They attempted to rape her and had almost succeeded when two of our men found her and stopped the attack.”

I felt my skin go scolding hot. “What happened to the two men?”

He turned around and looked at me. “I killed them myself.”

“What was this place she walked into?”

He shook his head. “It is one of my brothers' establishments where things of a sexual nature are provided to men, and sometimes women.”

“It’s a whore house?” He nodded. “And there are normally men there that take random women into one of the rooms?”

“From my understanding now, these two men had wandered off the street after getting a tip about the place. I don't deal with that side of my brother's business. I honestly don’t have the stomach for it.”

“How bad was it?”

His jaw tensed and for a moment I thought he might cry. “She had been stripped of all her clothes, and one of them almost had,” he shook his head. “I think you get the idea.”

I nodded in understanding. “And who is Max?”

“Max?” He asked.

“Yeah, she said his name in her dream.”

He shook his head. “I’m sorry, but I think I have told you enough. Alora wouldn’t be happy with me telling you what I already have. If she wants you to know she will tell you.”

I stood up. “Fine. We are heading to my parent's today and will be gone through the weekend. Where has Gabriele gone?”

“I can't tell you.”

I laughed, “fine if he returns before us, you can tell him where we are.”

“Luka?”

I turned and looked at him. “She needs someone like you in her life. You can protect her in a way no one else has ever been able to.”

I shook my head. “You’re a coward for saying that.”

He nodded. “You might be right. But there is so much more going on than you or she knows. I have protected her in my way her whole life.”

“I find that hard to believe.” I turned and pulled out my phone, dialing Arturo as I ran up the stairs.

“Hey.” He answered.

“Alora and I are coming today. Can you have a jet ready for us here?”

“Of course, is everything good?”

“No, I will fill you in tonight.”

I walked into the room and saw her sitting in her vanity. “We are going to my parents today.”
