Arturo looked at us in the rear-view mirror.

“He knows about Vigo?”

I nodded. “Yes, as I said, the two of us have no secrets.”

She looked between the two of us, a flash of sadness registering on her face.

“Don’t worry, he will keep it a secret.”

“And besides,” Arturo said, “I’m still not convinced it’s fake, at least not for Luka.”

I laughed and punched him in the shoulder. “Don’t listen to him. Like I told you, when this is done, I will leave you and let you get back to your life. If that’s what you want.”

She nodded. “Yeah.” She turned and looked out the window. “Right, we just have to find Wrath, and then we can go our separate ways.”

We pulled up to the house, mom came rushing out. I hopped out, offering my hand to Alora. She reached out, I tried to hide the shock on my face as I grabbed her wrist.

Mom pulled me into a hug and kissed my cheek. “I missed you.”

I laughed. “Mom, it's been two weeks.”

“I know, but it’s been an excruciating two weeks,” she turned to Alora, “hello sweetheart.”

Alora smiled. “Hi, Voralie.”

Mom pulled her into a hug. “We’re family now, it seems weird to have you call me Voralie. What if you just call me mom? I am your mother-in-law after all.”

“Well, I uh,” Alora looked at me, then Arturo.

“Oh, they don't care, do you boys?”

I shook my head, “of course not. I think it’s a great idea.”

Arturo nodded, “agree.”

Mom put her arm behind Alora’s, “well then, it’s settled. Come.” We followed mom into the house while some of the staff took our bags up the stairs. “Do you want to freshen up before dinner?”

Alora looked at me, she seemed a little overwhelmed. I laughed, “yeah let's get settled in, I'll show Alora where we’ll be staying, and then we will be back down.” I put my hand on the small of her back, “shall we wife?”

She nodded and the two of us walked up the stairs into my room. She walked around, running her fingers across my dresser, then my bed, “your room is different than I thought it would be.”

“Different how?”

She shrugged, “I don’t know, just different.”

I smiled and took my tie off. “Do you want to change?”

She looked down at the flowy black summer dress she was wearing. “Should I? Is this appropriate?”

“It’s fine, and looks beautiful on you, no need to change.”

She sighed and shook her head, “what is your angle?”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re all sweet, and nice, telling me I am beautiful. What is going on? Did you whisk me away to your parent's house to knock me off? Get rid of me to make it easier to take over, was this your plan all along?”

I stopped and looked at her, taking off my suit jacket and laying it across the chair sitting in the corner. “Are you serious?”

“Well, what else could it be?”

I walked toward her, she took a step back. I laughed and stopped, holding my hand out to her. “Just give me your wrist.”

She hesitated and then laid her wrist in my hand. I pulled her to me and looked into her eyes. Two weeks ago, I married her, but right now I felt like I was genuinely starting to have feelings for her. I’m not sure if it was how tough she was, which I found incredibly sexy. Or how she had these vulnerable moments, like falling asleep on my shoulder on the plane. Or the look in her eyes when I cupped her face before we left. Or maybe watching her laugh at a silly movie. But somewhere over the past week, she had somehow snuck in and touched some part of my heart. I was falling for her. I wanted to protect her, and guard her against the hell life I was learning she had. “Not everyone wants something from you, or is out to get you.”

She looked up at me, “I don't believe you.”

“Well then, I guess I will have to prove it to you. Can I kiss you?” She looked at me but said nothing. I inched closer to her, “stop me if you want.” I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers, our lips pressing together softly. I pulled away and looked into her eyes. “Should we go eat?” She nodded. I smiled and grabbed her wrist, leading her down the stairs and into the dining room.
