“Well,” mom smiled at Alora “I was hoping I could steal your wife away for a few hours. Have a girl's day, go shopping, and get our hair done. What do you think?”

Alora nodded. “I would love to spend the day with you.”

“Then it’s settled. We’ll take off after breakfast.”

We finished breakfast and made our way out of the dining room. “Meet me back here in fifteen minutes?” mom asked.

“Sure, I’ll go get ready.” Alora took off up the stairs.

Mom glanced at me, giving me that look only a mom can give. “How are things with the two of you?”

I looked up the stairs as Alora turned down the left hallway. She must have felt me looking at her because she turned, looking down at me. She watched me until she disappeared, her face holding that scowl she seemed to save just for me. “Uh,” I turned back to mom, “I am trying. But she is not very perceptive.”

Mom smiled, putting a hand on my cheek. “I'm trying, I think she might just need you.”

I laughed. “Mom, that woman needs no one.”

Mom shook her head. “That is not true, she needs it more than most. Keep trying.”

I smiled and kissed her on the cheek, “I will.” She turned and made her way toward her room. I stood there, staring up the stairs. Thinking about last night, finally having her body under me, finally getting a taste of her. She was satisfied, it was written all over her face as I saw her release and felt her clench around me. But the look on her face when it was over, that I couldn't figure out. I wasn't sure if she was remorseful, or if it was something else. The truth was I was falling for her, and I had no idea why. I found her intriguing. She was strong, she took no shit from anyone, and I found that incredibly sexy. Maybe I liked the chase, I have always liked a woman who played hard to get, and Alora, she was the MVP of hard to get. She was immune to my normal charms and didn't laugh at my wisecracks.

She came walking back down the stairs. Apparently, I was lost in my thoughts longer than I realized. She had changed into jeans and a t-shirt. Her hair was pulled up into a bun, which I was realizing was her go-to. When I saw her that day in the meeting, and when she would go to bed she’d let her hair down, but other than that, it was up in a bun. Even at the wedding, it was pulled up. She looked at me and started to say something.

“You ready?” Mom came walking out of the hallway.

Alora looked at her and smiled. “Yes, I’m ready.” She cleared her throat and shook her head, looking down at the ground.

“Did you want to say something?” I asked.

“No.” she shook her head.

I looked at her for a moment and then smiled. “Okay wife. You guys have fun on your girl's day.”

“We will be home in time for dinner.” Mom patted my shoulder.

I leaned in and kissed Alora on the cheek. She looked up at me and nodded, following mom outside.

Arturo walked down the stairs, his suit gone. Replaced with basketball shorts and a t-shirt. “I got a text,” he said as he stepped off the bottom step, “Declan wants a fight tonight.”

I furrowed my eyebrows and shook my head. “How does anyone even know I’m back in town?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’ll do it.”

“Want to throw fists, I need a workout?”

“Yeah, I’ll change, meet you in the gym.”

I made my way to the gym, Arturo and I sparring round after round.

“You’re getting soft,” Arturo threw a punch connecting with the left side of my face.

I stepped back and shook my head, stepping forward I swung a right hook, missing him.

“Seriously, what is wrong with you? You’re all over the place. You fight like that tonight and Declan might just kill you.”

I sighed, rolling my head, cracking my heck. “I guess I’m just distracted”
