“Oh yeah,” Nick nodded his head.

I shook my head, crossing my arms to my chest. “Is that right? Have you ever even been street fighting?” I looked at Nick, my eyes wide.

“As a matter of fact, I have,” Nick replied, “you don’t know everything Al.”

“Fine whatever,'' I shook my head, making my way back towards the stairs.

“Don’t miss me too much Cupcake,” Luka hollered.

“Screw you!” I heard them both laugh, as I made my way up the stairs fuming. He could go and get himself killed for all I cared.

“Trouble in paradise?”

I looked through the slots in the staircase, dad standing there with a drink in his hand. “No, he’s just going out with Nick.”

“Nick and he are buddies now?”

“I don’t know, I guess so.” I turned to walk up the stairs.

“Did you have fun in the city of our enemy?”

“It’s my husband's city now, maybe your enemy but not mine.”

“You are my daughter; my enemy is your enemy.”

I shook my head and started back up the stairs, ignoring him.

“I sure hope you’re not getting too close to the Rossi's. Looking at this I would say Voralie is warming right up to you.” I turned and looked at him coming up the stairs. He turned his cell phone around, showing me a picture of Voralie and I shopping.

I stepped down. “Did you have me followed?”

“There is nothing you do that I don’t know about,” he looked down at the phone. I watched as he scrolled through more pictures of her and me together, “be careful. It would sure be a shame if something were to happen to Vora, and it would be your fault.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

He grabbed my arm, pulling me down in front of him, “watch me! Don’t forget who you are, Alora, you are a Volante before anything else. Know where your allegiance lies!”

I glared as his grip on my arm tightened, not flinching, not giving him the satisfaction he wanted. I hated him, with every fiber of my being. “I used to want nothing more than to make you proud,” I laughed and shook my head, jerking my arm from him. “You better hope that doesn’t leave a mark, father, because my husband will be on the warpath if it does.” I stared into his eyes and saw that same glimpse of fear I had seen in his office last week. Fleeting but there. Luka scared him, and I liked it. I liked seeing The Devil break even just for a second. “Leave Voralie out of this, she has nothing to do with it.” I leaned down, looking him right in the eyes, “you have no idea what I am capable of.” I turned and walked up the stairs.

“Don’t turn your back on The Devil Alora!”

“Don’t underestimate the daughter of The Devil,” I looked at him. Then I turned and walked up the stairs, into my room, my heart racing in my chest. I had always given him a hard way to go, pushed his buttons, and tested the edge. But I had never stood up to him, not like that. I was always scared of the repercussions. I hoped I wouldn't come to regret it later. But it felt good. I felt energized. I felt strong.
