“I only have a moment,” he whispered. “Do as I told you. When Aoife falls asleep, go to the docks quick as you can. Straightaway, you understand, lass?”

“What about you?” she whispered back.

“I can take care of meself. It’s you I worry about.” He kissed her quickly and started away, but she grabbed him back.

“Callahan, tell them you don’t want to leave me. Tell them I can help. Let’s stay together.”

He shook his head. “If they aren’t about to kill me outright, we’ll be engaged in some sort of mischief. They won’t want women with them. Besides I want you safe back at The Farm. Do as I say, Bridget.”

But she didn’t release his hand. Slowly, he gave her the smile she had grown to love. It didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Do you think I’ll leave all that money unclaimed? Baron owes me, and I’ll be there to collect.” He tapped her nose with his finger. “That much you can count on.”

He lifted her fingers from his wrist then and was gone. The door opened and closed with a very final sounding click.

Bridget stuffed her fist against her mouth to keep from calling him back. He didn’t care about the money. How could she not have seen that until now? He might have cared initially, but there had been fear in his eyes, and it hadn’t been because he worried he might not be paid. He feared for her.

Well, she was as much an agent as he. More of one, as she’d seen far more training over the years. She wouldn’t just abandon him to the cold, bloody hands of Sean MacDonald.

A footstep sounded on the wood floor, and she remembered Aoife. Aoife, who had threatened her only a few hours ago in the pub.

“Are you planning to hide behind that screen all night?” Aoife called with syrup-laden sweetness.

Bridget stepped out and saw Aoife standing near the bed, arms crossed. When she saw Bridget, her brows lifted. “Don’t you look the picture of a well-satisfied woman?”

“You’ll understand if I don’t forgive your intrusion.”

“Oh, I don’t think you’ll soon be in a position to forgive anything, Mrs. Kelly. Not unless your man does exactly what Sean MacDonald tells him to do.”
