My pace quickens the closer I get to Luna's dorm. I need to tell her what is happening. I hate to think that in her mind, her best friend ditched her for no reason when, in reality, these fights are the reason.

Repetitively pressing the button for the elevator, my nerves pick up. What if this news is worse? Maybe I should tell Wilder that he needs to tell her, or I will. It’s not like he likes me anyway. My phone dings, thank god we are allowed to use phones, just not on school premises.

Cuyler:Where r u???????

I text back after I get in the lift.

Me:Doing something I will regret

Cuyler’s face lights up the screen, and I debate answering as the lift dings to Luna's floor. I step outside and consider letting it go to voicemail, but he knows I have my phone.

“Hello.” The sound of gunshots and cursing greets me.

“Are you okay?” He asks, clearly moving away from the sound.

“Besides the fact that I can never face any of you again, yes.” He laughs as if seeing me naked is hilarious.

“Bambi, you have nothing to be embarrassed about, trust me. Now, what are you doing that you will regret?” I lean against the wall, I can’t tell him because I shouldn’t know about the politics behind the fights.

“Nothing to worry about, just deciding if I’m a shitty friend or not.”

“I think you’re a great friend.” This time I laugh.

“Only because I don’t give a shit who you or your parents are and how I could benefit from being your friend, though the clothes were an added benefit.”

“Free advertising on a hot chick benefits me.”

“Okay, Casanova, I have to go.”

He sighs. “Okay, but are you coming to watch me tonight?” The fight nights are no secret around here, only the real reason they do them is secret, but now, I have a vested interest in seeing who I plan to take down. I need to make a friend on the inside to find out more. Lux will probably spill everything she knows after enough drinks. Cuyler might be my way in if he doesn’t have his own agenda.

“Wouldn’t miss it for the world, can I bring a friend?”

“Sure, I will leave your invite on your bed.” He hangs up after we exchange goodbyes. Pushing off the wall, I find Luna's door, and after one knock, a small-framed girl with a pixie cut, dyed dark blue, opens the door. Luna appears next to her and squeals. Luna has slightly come out of her shell when she isn’t around the Alphas. She is cautious of them, and I don’t blame her.

“Come in.” I follow her inside, and now that I’m actually facing her, my nerves are back. I chicken out the instant she looks at me. “I have news.” Her roommate scoffs and rolls her eyes, grabbing a backpack and leaving the room.

“What’s this news?” I ask, focusing my attention back on her.

“Wilder messaged me today.” Damn it, she looks so happy, how can I be the one to tell her she is a pawn in a stupid game. I really need to find out more before I say anything. And Diesel's warning is loud and clear in my mind. The small amount of courage I had has now fizzled out.

She bounces over to me and holds out her tablet with the Briar App open. He messaged her here, which seems impersonal; he would have her phone number surely since they were friends once upon a time. The message just readsHeyandnothing else, no explanation or apology.

“You haven’t replied?” She shakes her head, taking back her tablet.

“Honestly, I don’t know what to say. I know it’s stupid to be excited, but I miss our friendship.”

“Don’t reply yet, make him work for your time. Come with me to the fights tonight.” Her eyes go wide, I see the shock on her face.

“You got an invite to the fights? Even when I was friends with Wilder, he never invited me. Having a Wilder invite given to a poor girl would have ruined his reputation. Are you sure you want to take me?”

“Yep, Cuyler said I could bring a friend, and he isn’t stupid, surely he knows you’re my only friend. Though I think maybe Lux kind of likes me.”

“The Lux Lundenburg, she doesn’t like anyone. She isn’t mean to people, but she doesn’t have girlfriends.”

I shrug. “I don’t know, we had a future friendship moment. I do have to go back to my room, which I’m currently avoiding, to get changed and grab the invites. Why are there invites anyway?”

“The fights happen on Briar's private land, owned officially by Diesel’s father. People come from everywhere, but if it wasn’t invite only, the amount of people who would show up would be crazy. The Alphas have a massive online following. The Briar site is worldwide, you can have your profile secret if you like.”
