It dawns on my father that something is going on. He moves through the VIP section, but not before the police swarm the building. I drop the microphone and duck under the ropes. Students are running, and the police just let them go–they are here for my father, and I’m sure a few other upstanding members of society who will have their lawyers on the phone as we speak and will be out within a few hours.

Cyrus meets me at the side of the ring, and I pull her into my arms, her heart beats rapidly against her chest.

“Are you sure they won’t let him go?” She asks.

“From what we have on him, I highly doubt it.”

I hear my name shouted, and I turn to see my father being dragged by two men. They stop for a second after his pleading.

“Call your mother and get this sorted,” he snaps. “I should have known better than to work with Jamison.”

The pure hatred in his glare that's aimed at Cyrus has me seeing red. “Do it yourself, you want to blackmail my girlfriend and hold a sex tape over her head, this is on you.”

“Don’t be so sure, boy, my name is clear.”

I laugh at him. “This time I have all my ducks in a row. I win.”

The uniformed police drag him away as he yells obscenities at me. He has told me my entire life that he would always be on top and always win. That no one could ever take him down. I’m confident enough to know he will go away for a while, and when he gets out, I know he will come for me, but I’ll be ready. I will make sure he can’t so much as fart inside without me knowing. Mitchel Jamison has money and connections, and he will want to keep his daughter safe as much as I do.

The entire room is in chaos, people are being handcuffed, and a young cop not much older than us walks over to me. “I need to cuff you,” he says.

“Hey Morgan, let all the kids go. I want all the men in suits and anyone that looks older than a high school student.”

“Yes, boss,” the young guy says and walks off. The older man is joined by Mitchel.

“Dad,” Cyrus says. “What are you doing here?”

“He came to make sure that I stuck to my word,” the older guy says. “I promised no kids would be arrested since a lot of you are over eighteen.”

“Bill, you know you have more than enough work to keep you busy with these men.”

Bill scoffs. “Yeah, most will be held until their fancy lawyers show up, but we have enough on Malcolm to hold him a lot longer.”

“You two should get back to campus, I will call you in a few days.”

Cyrus gives her father a hug, and we walk out of the building hand in hand. Rebel bounces up to us.

“Holy fuck, all our fathers have been arrested,” he laughs. “Are we still going to party?”

I look at Cyrus, and she nods. “It looks like most of the police are leaving anyway, and I doubt they will search the grounds.”

Rebel whoops and says he will gather everyone and send them to the clearing. Cyrus takes my hand, and we walk together just behind a group of students.

“Thank you for not going ahead with the fight. It means a lot.”

“No, you mean a lot to me, and if throwing the fight means you will never doubt us then that is what I needed to do.”

“I love you, Diesel Briar.”

I let the sound of those words wash over me and comfort me like a damn blanket on a winter's day. I have never felt so content as I do right now.

Epilogue

Cyrus

I can’t believe it’s been just over six months since we graduated. Diesel and I decided to travel along the coast of Australia and see as much as we could. He wanted to do it in five-star hotels, but after some convincing, we decided to stay at backpackers, and once a month, we would do a hotel. Though after the first month, he was fine staying with the backpackers. We made a ton of friends and shared so many experiences together.

“Fancy seeing you here.”
