“Yes, and Ivy is Blaine’s middle name so don’t laugh. Do you know how much pressure there is to name a baby?”

After we spend some time with Emory and Willow, we take an Uber to Grumpy’s, and everyone is already there.

I head over to the bar while Diesel goes to the pool table where the rest of the guys are sitting.

“Chad, I told you that we have this. Go and be with Mady.” A girl with long blonde hair taps her unicorn slippered foot against the ground.

“I know, but you remember what happened the first time Logan was in charge. He turned the place into a karaoke bar.”

“And you made good money from that and still have them every Thursday night, so it wasn’t all bad.”

“Hey boss, can we call this one the Legendary Logan?” The guy holds his hand up in the air like there is an imaginary sign with this name on it.

The tall guy rolls his eyes. “Fine, but if this goes wrong, it’s on you, and for shit’s sake, change your shoes if you’re working behind the bar.”

She salutes him, and he leaves.

“Hi, I’m Ella. What can I get you?”

Ella, who wears unicorn slippers. Diesel mentioned that his friend Rhys hooked him up with his friend Arden who has a wife that insisted that she send us unicorn slippers as a welcome gift.

“You’re not the Ella that has a husband named Arden by any chance?”

“I could be, it depends on how you know Arden.” I can sense the humour in her tone.

“I’m Cyrus, Arden is renting us the entire building across from you.”

Her face lights up. “Oh, I just dropped your slippers off earlier, I’m so excited that more girls are moving in. Most of the time, the boys out number us two to one. I blame our neighbour JD for having five boyfriends.”

My eyes go wide. Five, I can’t even imagine how that would work. “That was my reaction, hell, one guy is enough for me. Most days he drives me bat shit crazy.”

“I feel you there.”

“What do you feel?” Diesel asks, sliding up behind me and wrapping his arms around my front.

“You, driving me crazy.”

Diesel laughs from behind me, and I introduce Ella and Diesel. We order drinks, and Ella says she will pop over to the apartment with the girls in a few days to introduce them.

Once we join the others, Lux holds up her drink. “To us and our futures being in our own hands.”

We all cheers to that. We play a few rounds of pool, and the guy from earlier sets up a karaoke machine while Ella walks around in her unicorn slippers that she was supposed to change out of.

“How about we go and see the new apartment before people start singing?”

I nod up at Diesel, and we say our goodbyes. When we reach the building, it doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the inside has been freshly renovated. Diesel takes us up to the top floor and we step into a small hallway, and he unlocks the door before scooping me up into his arms and carrying me inside.

“You do realise you only need to do that when you get married.”

“Who knows when that will be, and I wanted to do it now.” He sets me on my feet, and I look around, the apartment is crazy big and furnished already which is a relief. A large package sits on the kitchen table, probably the one from Ella. I open the cellophane and there are two pairs of unicorn slippers, matching his and her Disney pyjamas, candles, and a shirt that says ‘That sounds like a you problem.’

“She looks like she is going to be a real treat,” Diesel says, picking up the men’s Disney pyjamas and screwing up his nose. “Do adults wear these?”

“Yes we do, and I would barely call us adults, I didn’t even know how to use those coin operated washing machines, remember?”

The only downside to staying at backpacker accommodation was living like we were on limited money, and for us, that wasn’t easy. We might be able to operate fancy washing machines and cooktops, but it was a whole new experience.

Diesel laughs at the memory of me trying to tap my card against the machine when a woman explained that I would have to go and get cash out and use the coin machine. I don’t know if I have ever used cash in my entire life. My father gave me a card as soon as I started leaving the house in primary school for emergencies, and even then, a driver would always drop me off. Even when I was with Zeke, he always paid.
