“I hadn’t heard about that.” She pulled a stool over and sat on it. “Tell me what’s goin’ on with you and the ADA.”

“That’s complicated, Alex.”

“Zin says she has an ulterior motive.”

“Did the caballeros get a new member while I was out of town?”

“I’ve been honorary my whole life. You know that.”

I raised a brow. I’d also heard she got in a world of hurt when her father caught her spying on one of the meetings.

“Whatever. I know, okay? There’s no point in denying it. Now, what’s up with you and Seraphina Reeve? Oh, and thanks for the bonus you tacked onto the bid for the kids, but I have to ask. Why didn’t she pay it herself? Did you have it fixed like Brix?”

If I had, it sure wouldn’t have been Sera I would’ve chosen to win. At least not then.

“It’s complicated,” I repeated.

“Do you think she’s really on the hunt?”

“For?”

“C’mon, don’t make me work this hard.”

I pulled a stool over and sat beside her. “You wanna know the truth?”

“Of course I do.”

“I’m crazy about her. First time since...you know.”

“I’m happy to hear it.” I was used to the hesitation in Alex’s voice.

“But you, like everyone else, think she has an ulterior motive.”

“You guys rescued her sister.”

I shook my head. “Is there anything you don’t know?”

“One thing.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“Why don’t you ask her, Ridge?”

I rested my elbows on my knees and looked down at the ground. “I plan to. Or maybe it’s planned now.”

“What’s that mean?” Alex asked.

“We were supposed to get together this afternoon. She canceled, saying something came up.”

“Hmm.” She tapped her bottom lip like Tryst so often did. “Where is she now?”

“According to Press, she went to her office.”

“You can’t exactly show up there and invite her to lunch. Her sister is staying at Seahorse, though, right?”

“I’m beginning to think you’re clairvoyant.”

She nudged me with her knee. “Nah, just nosy. Anyway, camp out there until she gets back, then ask her straight out.”
