“The men will want to play a round of golf after brunch,” Blake says when we walk to the dining hall. “Will you be okay with the other women?”

I nod. I don’t know how well I’ll fit in, but Angela Lawrence is one person I can talk to, at least, without feeling like I don’t belong.

“Go and have fun, don’t worry about me.” I want Blake to be able to have a good time.

We arrive at the dining hall, and the room has been set up with two long tables. Women and men talk and eat, sipping orange juice or coffee. When we sit down, we’re warmly welcomed by everyone at our table.

“We were wondering when the happy couple was going to join us,” a man says. I think he’s Mr. Callahan.

Blake laughs. “We don’t run on a time schedule here, you know that. We get to sleep all we like.”

“Or not at all, eh?” Dillon says from the other side and winks at me.

I blush hard. They all think we’re together. And Blake is set on keeping up the act. I don’t mind it at all. I know that it’s not how things are between us—besides our talk about Blake’s past, we don’t have any kind of understanding about what we are and where were headed.

But like the way everyone seems to approve of us being together and how Blake seems to like the attention we’re getting, too.

Brunch is a lot more pleasant now that I’ve been introduced to a few of the people here, and even the women who were so hostile last night don’t seem to feel the same about me this morning.

Mrs. Dillon says a few kinds words to me, which is the last thing I expected.

After brunch, I’m already a little tipsy again. The orange juice turned out to be mimosas. I feel like and airy and confident.

“What are your plans when the men play golf?” Angela asks me after Blake kisses me and heads out with the guys.

“I haven’t thought that far,” I admit.

“Come with us. We’re going to sunbathe around the pool,” Angela offers.

I glance at Mrs. Callahan and Mrs. Dillon, who both nod.

“That will be nice, thank you,” I say.

We head back to our cottages to get dressed and meet at the large, sparkling pool. The weather is incredible.

“God, I had a body like yours once,” Angela says when I lay down in a red bikini.

She’s much older than I am, with graying hair, and she wears a one-piece.

“You look fantastic,” I offer.

“Thank you, honey. I look good for my age, but not as good as you do. Blake really hit the jackpot.”

I blush and shake my head. “It’s not really like that.”

“Yes, so you keep saying. Although that man is head over heels in love, so whatever you’re doing, you’re doing a good job of it.”

“Do you feel the same about him?” Mrs. Dillon asks me. Patricia, I think her name was.

“Patti, don’t pry,” Mrs. Callahan scolds.

“Come on, Beth. You’re as curious as I am.”

Beth Callahan nods and laughs. “You’re right!” And I’m a sucker for gossip, too.” She looks apologetically at me. “Looks like you’re the subject of scrutiny for the weekend, darling.”

I laugh. “It’s okay. I don’t have anything to hide.”

“So, do you feel the same about him?” Patti asks, and I blush.
