That surge of data, and possible scenarios, and hypotheses required reprocessing. She was still trying to be in scientist mode when it came to him. She couldn’t cope, otherwise.

When she did let herself feel, which was more often than was good for her, every particle of her ached for him. Every iota of her missed him.

When she organized the house one afternoon, she realized she wasn’t the only one.

She was putting things away in Hannah’s room, trying to rediscover the surface of the desk that hid under papers, rubber bracelets, fairy miniatures, markers, and textbooks, when she noticed an envelope. It was made of a pink A4 sheet, which Hannah had folded and glued to look like an envelope. It was addressed in Hannah’s squiggly handwriting.

Hope covered her mouth. It wasn’t sealed, so she opened it. Inside was a sheet of the same pink paper. It was decorated with little drawings of globes, hearts, rainbows, and butterflies, and a sticker of “I’m a Champion” that Hannah had received at the dentist’s office. She read the letter.

I invite you to my contest.

I know what to do, but what if I need more advice urgently? If you come, you can help. And I know you will clap.

Regards,

Hope sucked in a painful breath as tears shot into her eyes and blurred her sight. It was her daughter’s raw request of him that had done her in. He had shone a light on her, and she wanted and needed it back. Much like she did.

With trembling fingers, she folded the paper and put it back into the envelope before it could get wet.
