Chapter 34

“I told you they’d drop it eventually if we act smart.” Jordan got up from his chair and paced the room.

“Smart would have been to prevent it before it happened.”

“Well, she’s your client now, Brin, so why didn’t you prevent it?”

The silence on the other end of the line told him he had gotten his point across.

“Any tangible impact for her?” he asked.

“No. People are glad to pretend this hot potato never existed. They probably expect to receive the same grace when it happens to them.”

“Good luck with that,” he muttered.

“Anyway, The Whisperers are the only ones still giving this attention on their evening session. That Val bitch is practically wetting her panties over this. But I can see them dropping it, too, soon.”

“They will.” Jordan lifted then immediately put the lid back on the room service tray. The smell of the beef made him sick.

He went over to open the window.

“So, what’s going on with your poetic endeavors? With you running off to Cali first thing, I assume the woman who stole your heart is there? Did you get her to see you’re a catch after all, or was she appalled by this?”

“Night, Dana. Nice doing business with you again.” He pressed the red key on his phone.

He didn’t need reminders of the woman who held his heart in her hands, a continent away. She was on his mind all the time.

He moved from the window and back into the room that felt less stuffy now. Pushing the things that were scattered on the desk, including one plastic-covered drawing of a wonky globe, Jordan sunk himself in the type of thing he was good at—work.
