VANESSA

Bill wouldn't leave me alone all day. Whenever I turned around there he was. It was like him seeing me with another guy made him realize how much he missed me. Well too damn bad. I had heard through the grapevine later that day he'd broken up with the nurse in hopes of getting me back. I couldn't believe I was trying to deal with my feelings for Grayson, and then I heard this bullshit.

He came to talk to me when I was looking over a chart and I told him straight up. “Look. We had fun for a little bit, but I'm not interested anymore. I have a boyfriend.” Yeah, I was gonna use that excuse again.

He shook his head. “But you and I are good together. We know each other. We know our schedule. We work together. We're perfect for each other. I miss you, Vanessa.”

I rolled my eyes. “No you don't. You just want what you can't have. Please go back to your little girlfriend and leave me alone.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Grayson walking down the hallway. I watched him turn around and decided to run after him.

“Grayson, wait up!”

He stopped and shoved his hands into the pocket of his jeans. He was wearing the same pair of jeans I'd seen them wear almost every time I saw them and a faded red t-shirt - my favorite color.

“Hi, I smiled tentatively at him.

“Hey, you look busy. I'll let you go. He glanced over to where Bill was still standing, watching us. He started to turn around and I put my hand on his arm.

“Just wait. I want to talk to you.”

“Okay.”

He wasn't very talkative and I wondered what he had been doing there. I’d assumed it was to talk to me but he didn’t seem like he was happy to see, so maybe I was wrong.

“I'm really sorry I ran out the other morning. I guess I got spooked.” I looked down at my shoes and looked back up at him. “If you're interested, maybe we could date for real.”

A smile broke out on his face and he took his hands out of his pockets. “But what about the doctor?” He nodded towards where Bill was still standing.

I rolled my eyes. I'd roll my eyes so much today I was surprised they hadn’t fallen out of my head. “The good doctor can get bent. I’m not interested in him. I likeyou. He smiled and leaned over to kiss me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and we kissed right there in front of everyone. I didn't care; he was my boyfriend after all.

The kiss ended and he pressed his forehead against me. “Maybe we can continue this later. When do you get off work?”

“I’m done in a couple of hours. I’ll meet at my place? I can text you on my way home.”

He smiled. “I can't wait.” He kissed me softly and I watched him leave. When I turned back to Bill, he looked angry, his face red. I just smiled and walked by shaking my hips, letting him watch and see what he was missing.

The rest of my shift couldn’t end fast enough. When it was finally over, I sent Grayson a text, letting him know I was on my way home. I walked as fast as I could back to my apartment, grinning when I saw him sitting outside waiting for me.

He reached for me as I approached, pulling me against him. He leaned down for a kiss. We kissed for what seemed like forever. I ended the kiss. “Maybe we should go upstairs.”

He nodded and let me take his hand to lead him up the stairs. This time it would be as my real boyfriend.

EPILOGUE ~ GRAYSON

ONE YEAR LATER

“You know if you never let me out of bed, we're never gonna make it to the festival.” Her head was on my chest and she tilted her head back, looking up at me.

It was Saturday afternoon and we were supposed to meet our friends at the Notting Hill Carnival. It had been one year since I had seen her and I had big plans for tonight. She had no idea.

“Fine,” I said and kissed her forehead. “Let's get in the shower.” I winked.

She rolled her eyes, stood up and headed towards the bathroom. We'd been living together now for the last two months and it was wonderful. It had taken a while for both of us to gain enough trust to take this step together. We both knew that if we were going to live together, we were going to be together forever. Both of us took commitment very seriously, and we couldn't be happier.

She was doing great at her job. I was picking up more freelance work.
