She looks up at me and I have to look away. I don’t need that type of distraction around.

“You need rest.”

“I’ve been resting.”

I grab the back of her thighs and lift her legs around me. My mistake again. She stiffens with a gasp and the air sweetens. Her legs are loose around my waist and her hands are burry in the front of my chest. “It’s time for you to rest, little mouse.”

She swallows, nodding. “Okay.”

I focus on carrying her up the stairs and when we are in the room, I lift her off of me to set her in the bed.

“What are you going to do?”

I look down at the small woman in my bed and it brings back memories of having multiple women in bed, dressed in the same fashion. That was a really long time ago. “Cut more wood, clean…” Avoid you. I give a shrug, leaving the room.

Distance yourself. That’s what I’m good at and always have been. I spent hours being away, cutting wood, and cleaning places I’ve cleaned before. I only interact with her when I help her clean, use the bathroom or feed her.

The next night something wakes me up from the couch. The fur on my body stands up and my eyes move to the door, sensing something out there. It feels a good way away.

It feels too powerful with swirling of constant magic, so I know it can’t be my little mouse. She’s human. Taking two steps at time, I move upstairs and into the room. I only peeked, just to make sure she’s awake.

“Is it a wolf?” she says in a whisper.

I freeze, about to close the door. “You feel it?”

Slowly, she shift in the bed. “He’s been staring at me.”

Moving into the room, I move to the window. Through the pitch black of the woods, I see the small white glowing eyes.

“Is he friendly?”

I see the outline of its huge body on all fours. If I had to guess, it’d be no. I close the curtain and say, “Stay.”

Her hand wraps around my wrist. “Please don’t go. What if it hurts you?”

I glance over my shoulder. “What if it hurts you?” It’s weird to even say that. It’s always been about me. If I was alone, that thing out there would be dead. “I can’t… protect you, if that thing is out there.”

She pulls on me, but I barely budge. “You could protect me from in here… Please, don’t go.”

My eyes scan her face. I can see her so well in the dark and I can see how confused and scared she is. I feel like we both admitted something that should have stayed silent. Relentingly, I move from her grasp and sit in the wooden chair in the corner.
