Iron pools in my mouth from my cheek.

“Or not? Am I wrong, son?”

I stop the growl about to rumble in my chest as my body runs cold. “None of your business.” I look over my shoulder at him. “Respectfully.”

“You know,” Thatcher starts. “Leighann was very meticulous… I’m sure she wouldn’t let you have your inheritance until you graduated from the academy, right?”

“Sir,” I warn. This was a touchy subject. Who were they to think that they know everything?

“I have a deal and it involves you getting your inheritance early.”

I bite my lip, turning around. “I’m listening.”

The Devil stands. “I’m going on a trip soon for a while. I want you to protect Asura for a few months and then you will have your money.”

I swallow. “Why me?”

“You’re just as powerful as Ledger. You two together—though there’s a lot of hate—can protect her.”

“She doesn’t need protection.” She most likely doesn’t, but why am I saying that? I am only in the academy for the money.

He watches me. “Do we have a deal?”

I scoff. He could barely protect her. “I have no idea what I’m walking into. It’s barely been safe in this house, and what? You want me to protect her at the academy? I’m sorry, I don’t make deals with the Devil.” I move to walk out again.

“We will add more money. Enough so you never have to work under a reaper for your entire life.”

My tongue swirls in my mouth. That sounds amazing. But there are risks. I can be killed just by being around her. Tomorrow, I plan to ignore her completely, and just stop being around these people. But how can I do that now? I want that money. I am only going to the academy because my parents made it so I won't have the money until I graduate in two years. But I could have it sooner, right? “Fine… I’m in. But I want the truth. I want no lies from anyone.”

Devil looks down on me, even in his human form. “Let’s move to my office.”

I look at Death, wondering what the fuck I just got myself into.

I move down the steps, nerves shaking me to my core. I had gotten dressed alone while the guys packed and got dressed in their rooms.

My red skirt sways with each bounce in my step, and when I hit the bottom step, Fenric peeks from the doorway of the kitchen.

“Hi!” he squeals, moving to my side as we walk in for breakfast. I pat his head lightly before pouring a drink from the bar.

Before I can sip it, someone takes the glass from my hands. “Why are you like this?” Inarian’s deep voice comes.

I look up at him.So now he wants to talk to me? When he’s leaving? Then I remember everything that Ledger and Hazen said yesterday about what he went through.

“What?” Inarian snaps, sipping the drink that I poured for myself.

“Give me that!” I snatch it back from him. The glass is chilled now. I chug it before he can take it back. The liquid runs straight to my stomach, warming itself a path along the way. I hand the glass back to him and move to the breakfast table, between Ledger and Hazen. Today, Inarian sits in front of me, eying me.

I glance at Ledger, seeing he notices. He always notices when Inarian is looking at me. Ledger glances at me, and I pinch my brows together. He gives me a shrug. He doesn’t know what’s going on either.

My eyes meet Hazen’s bright blue eyes. He’s in uniform, a short-sleeve button-up with a black logo on the side, and black slacks and sneakers. He has chains through his belt loops, and his hair is slicked back into a nicely curled, messy mohawk.

Ledger is the same, but with less chains, more rings, and an open shirt. His hair is fluffed just a bit. His crimson eyes are still on Inarian.

Inarian’s uniform has a striped black tie and he only has a few rings on his enormous veiny hands. His dark hair falls against his forehead.

I close my thighs, looking down.

Fuck. Ledger is going to know something is up.
