Cruz rolls in the opposite direction with a grunt. “Fine, goodnight, Grandma.”

I’ve done everything to distract myself from last night since sleeping didn’t exactly work.

At the crack of dawn, I got up and changed into my running gear. I ran on the pavement beside the beach with my headphones on, playing club music which is just beats and no lyrics.

There were a few other joggers, but nothing too busy until the sun rose, and every person was out walking their dog.

Cruz had already left for training when I got back home, giving me the peace I need. But, of course, a shower is my first priority since I’m drenched in sweat.

I don’t have work again until Monday, so I tried to drown myself in studying again since it comes so easily to me—except for today. I’m unable to concentrate, distracted by the way my foot taps so anxiously on the floor.

When I manage to gain some momentum in the late afternoon, my phone rings with Cruz’s goofy face flashing on the front. Letting out a huff, I hit accept.

“What?” I answer with an annoyed tone.

“Is that how you greet your roommate and the love of your life?”

The corners of my lips curve upward into a smile. The background sounds are really loud, forcing Cruz to raise his voice for me to hear him.

“Where are you? I can barely hear.”

“I’m at a bar,” he tells me, the echo of laughter surrounding him. “A couple of the guys wanted to go out for some drinks, and you know how it is.”

I know exactly how it is. The boys convince Cruz, who initially says no. But, after much pressure, he finally caves then winds up drunk as hell, with me having to deal with him.

So, there go my plans of studying since he’ll probably call me in a few hours to pick him up from some woman’s house he ended up with.

“Listen, Addy. I need a huge favor from you.”

“What is it now?” I ask, irritated. “If this is about bringing someone home, you know the rules. At least introduce me to her first. That way, I know who stole my wallet in the morning.”

“It’s about tomorrow night,” he begins with but then is distracted by someone yelling his name. “I need you to be my date to this event Mom is making me go to.”

I close the screen of my MacBook. “Date? What event is it?”

“Something about charity. Anyway, she asked me to be there. You know I hate going to these things, so I’m not short of begging, just so you know.”

My body moves forward as I lean my elbows on the desk.

“Who else is going?”

“I don’t know, Addy. I didn’t ask because I don’t care,” he says with frustration. “So, will you be my date?”

“Okay, I’ll be your date. Can you at least give me the dress code? This is very last minute.”

“Mom said to wear a suit.”

“I meant for me, moron.”

“Addy, if I have to wear a suit, then I think you need to dress in something fancy. Do you hear me? Fancy not slutty.”

A small laugh escapes me. “So protective, like a big brother though technically I’m older than you.”

“C’mon, is that how you look at me? What if we’re soulmates, and we have no idea.”

This time, my laughter grows louder. “I think you’re drunk and need to get laid. I’ll see you later.”
