He nodded. He was in dire need of a pack of Guinness plus a bottle of whiskey. Sharing women was common in Macha, but he’d never done it. While some men enjoyed the thrill, he was never one to share at the same time. If he was with a woman, he wanted to be the only one.

Closing his eyes, Brewer groaned. His dick ached and his heart burned to see the spark in Delphi’s eyes once more. He couldn’t let her slip through his grasp. Sitting up, he slapped his knees. He’d make Delphi realize that Macha wasn’t all dark and scary like the stories the citizens of Snowshoe liked to tell about them around the campfire.

“Better get your sleep, Delphi, because you’ll only get a wink once you’re mine.”

He walked over to the pool table and racked the balls before he grabbed a cue stick. He had to get his mind off Delphi for a little bit at least. With music pumping through the clubhouse and nymphs passing beer around, it wasn’t likely, but he had to try.

He waved at one of the prospects and let the shorter man take the break. Stomach growling, Brewer watched the prospect sink three balls before giving him a turn. He’d need to eat eventually.Something French, perhaps.

Brewer hit four balls into the pockets and grinned. He knew just the place to stop at to satisfy his appetite. He’d just have to take the chance—every day if necessary—that the gorgeous chef would let him in the door.

CHAPTER6

DELPHI

The afternoon rushat the restaurant made the day fly by. Before she knew it, the sun had dipped behind the skyline, casting an orange glow over the valley. Delphi paused at the window after seating a couple with a new baby and merely gazed out at the colorful streaks in the clouds. The rising and setting of the sun were her favorite parts of the day. She always saw both when time permitted. Missing either wouldn’t feel right. Her parents used to sit out on their wraparound porch with a warm drink and watch each one. She had fond memories of enjoying that ritual all through her childhood to the day she left for Paris.

“Delphi, there’s someone at the front, asking for you.”

Snapping out of her trance, she peeked toward the small waiting area, but couldn’t see beyond the pillars situated midway through the bistro. “Thanks, Cindy.” She smiled at the waitress and swiftly moved to the front.

Reaching the desk where she kept the restaurant’s reservations book, Delphi frowned at the lack of new patrons. The three couples and one family were still waiting for their tables to open, but no one else was sitting on the bench along the wall.

She shook her concerns aside and skimmed the waiting list. A bachelorette party was scheduled to arrive in the next few minutes, and she chewed on her bottom lip. The shortness of staff wouldn’t be a problem so long as the current customers didn’t linger at the tables she planned to push together to seat the twenty women who were sure to be rambunctious guests.

“Delphi Windsor?”

The voice made her cringe. Pasting on a smile, she looked up. “Andrea. Nice to see you.”

“Oh my God, do you work here?” the brunette with perfectly straight hair asked, judgment evident in her tone. A giant diamond ring sat on her third finger, and when Delphi saw it, she immediately realized who the bachelorette party was for.

“Actually, I own it.” Anxiety bubbled in her gut as she watched the entryway fill with women she knew from high school. Most of them looked the same, but a few had deteriorated over the years. It was the one small victory, since these women had tormented her during her years at Snowshoe High.

Andrea cast doubtful eyes around the bistro. “How… quaint. We all wondered what happened to you. I mean, after that biker broke your heart, you kind of went AWOL on us.”

She gritted her teeth. “I was never one of you, Andrea.”

“By proxy you were.”

Delphi tried to keep her composure as best she could. After all these years, the preppy girl shouldn’t still get to her, but she did. High school was rough on everyone, but it had been especially bad for the formerly chubby Delphi and her love of all things food related. The only reason she attended the same parties as the popular girls was because of her boyfriend at the time. It wasn’t until he broke up with her that she learned he’d dated her as part of the Greenback Cutthroats MC club initiation.

“Is this the rest of your party?”

Andrea flipped her hair. “Not yet, but you can seat us, right? I hate waiting in the lobby.” She crinkled her nose. “There’s a draft from your flimsy doors. I’ll catch a cold for sure if I stay here very long.”

For the second time that evening, Delphi fought back the urge to walk into the kitchen and toss pots and pans around until she had her fill. But she wouldn’t. She was a dignified business owner whether her high school bully would ever admit it or not. Stooping to their level wasn’t who she was.

“I’ll go check on your table.” She didn’t wait for a response. It’d be a bitchy one, and she really wasn’t in the mood to hear any more.

Making it to the kitchen, she spotted her favorite waitress chatting up the line cook while she waited for the rest of her table’s order. “Hey, Tessa, the bachelorette party is here early. Do you think we can move a few tables to the far corner and get them out of the way?”

Tessa piled plates onto a tray, the food steaming. “You bet. Give me a quick second, and I’ll grab one of the busboys to help.”

“Thanks.” Delphi walked around the kitchen, making sure the food was plated correctly. She stopped and stirred the Mornay sauce and sampled it with a spoon before adding a pinch more salt. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her that the last meal she ate was earlier in the day with Jupiter. The energy from the three cinnamon buns had waned with the passing hours.

Making a mental note to make something of substance later, she bit into a slice of warm baguette and hurried back to the front. The phone rang on the reception table, and she answered it.

A large body blocked her peripheral view of the bachelorette party impatiently waiting on their table.
