“And yet you’re still here.” Instead of moving inside, she pressed her back to the door and met his gaze. “Remind me again: why are you standing on my stoop?”

“I missed you.”

“Bullshit.”

He smirked. “All right, well, I did miss your fiery mouth.” His gaze dipped to her lips, and she unconsciously licked them. “But I did have another reason for showing up tonight.”

Delphi cocked her head to the right, waiting for him to explain.

“I wanted to invite you to dinner.”

“Tempting.” She looked at her watch and her stomach took that as a cue to grumble. “What’s on the menu?”

“I’ve been smoking some pork all day. Makes for delicious pulled barbecue sandwiches.”

Her mouth watered. Delphi couldn’t recall the last time she had smoked pulled pork. It sounded tastier by the moment. “I’m assuming the whole club will be there?”

He nodded. “Yep. Dinner at the club is family style. I’m in charge of the main course tonight, but there’ll be several other options if you don’t like meat.”

“Oh, no, I like meat. I like it a lot.”

A boyish grin covered his face, and she rolled her eyes, realizing where his mind had drifted. “Is your head ever out of the gutter?”

“Nope.”

It didn’t take her long to decide. She didn’t have a plan for dinner, and the thought of microwaved Japanese noodles wasn’t luring her like the idea of Brewer’s meal.

“Fine, but I need to shower.” She opened the door and wasn’t even surprised when he followed her inside and up the staircase. This man has zero boundaries.Somehow it didn’t bother her like it should. She felt comfortable around him. Safe even.

He glanced around the open-concept apartment. “You have a nice place.”

“Thanks.” She hung her jacket up and slipped off her shoes. “It came with the bistro, so I can’t complain. A lot cheaper than renting a place separately.”

Brewer sank into the couch, grabbing the remote and flipping on the television. Fiona immediately hopped up on his lap as if she’d known him her entire cat life.

“No, no. Make yourself at home,” she said sarcastically, walking down the hallway. “I’ll be out in a few minutes.”

“Take your time,” he called back, a boxing match droning through the screen in front of him.

Grabbing a fresh towel from the hallway closet, Delphi hurried into the bathroom and cranked on the shower. Steam filled the space, but that wasn’t the reason she started sweating again. Brewer in her living room, mere feet away from her naked body, was the culprit.

Stop fantasizing about him, she told herself, stepping under the warm spray of water. If she made it through the night without kissing him again, she’d be surprised. Brewer was more dangerous by the hour, and her body knew it.

CHAPTER13

BREWER

Brewer had an ulterior motive.Of course he wanted to spend more time with Delphi. Every inch of him wanted to do more than that, but he held back. Despite the apprehensive front, she was scared of both her past and future. He didn’t blame her one bit.

Watching her in the passenger seat of his truck, Brewer wanted to tell her the truth. She was nervous enough if the way her thumbs were fidgeting was any indicator. Still, Reaper asked him to invite Delphi to dinner, and he finally succeeded. It had taken all week, thanks to her evading him at every attempt.

“Anything crucial I should know before I walk in there?” Delphi asked as they pulled into the clubhouse parking lot. “I know the basics about clubs, but they all have little nuances.”

A ping of regret filtered through him. He put the truck in Park and shut off the engine. “Just have fun. Macha’s one big, crazy, happy family.” He smiled, coaxing a small answering smile from her. “Don’t worry, sweet cheeks, I won’t let anybody get too friendly with ya.”

Delphi unbuckled and took a breath before opening the door. If he were a gentleman and they were on a date, he’d rush over and hold it open for her.But this isn’t a date.He stepped outside, a hint of moisture in the air.And I sure as hell am not a gentleman.

Brewer noticed the parking lot was full tonight. Nobody missed a good pork sandwich—especially not his brothers. It made his stomach churn for new reasons. His brothers weren’t anything she couldn’t handle, but he also had underlying motives in bringing her tonight. If he wasn’t careful, he’d lose her.
